15 DAY - LEOPARD HUNT WITH HOUNDS, ZIMBABWE

Daily Rate @ $650 per day x 15 days = $9,750
Houndsmans fee fee $ 5,500
Dog permit $400
Trophy fee on cat $4,500 (payable if Leopard is killed or wounded)
$100 cities tag to export your trophy

4% tax on trophy fees
Baiting: Depending on conditions at the time, the PH may decide to hang a few baits. This provides a starting point from where the hounds can track the Leopard and also gives one a good idea of the Leopards in the area and so on. Since there is little plainsgame in the leopard area we sometimes have to buy livestock to use as baits. Price of these bait animals at cost.
Observers $250 per day per person.

2. FYI, for the sake of providing information since 2008 all our leopard hound hunts have been 100% successful. However this does not imply a leopard is guaranteed in any way. On the last hunt of 2010, a regular AR poster hunted two leopard with us on one trip successfully.
3. We only do 3-4 of these hunts annually. Two leopards are still available for 2011. 50% of daily rate is required as a deposit to book your hunt, the balance is payable 60 days before your hunt date.

5. If seen plainsgame can be taken for trophy fees, listed below. If the hunter is especially keen on hunting plainsgame after the Leopard has been taken, this can be arranged in a different area within driving distance of the Leopard hunting area.

Amen....besides the trends of a few clowns putting their 2 cents worth in every time someone posts a hunt has long ago gotten old. If it's illegal help people out by bringing it to attention. If it's legal SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!

This was really a great hunt ! I have not made a hunt report yet but you can see alot of pics if you click the link below. This was my third leopard hunt and my best, one thing is for sure I will be back hunting cats in Zim with Gary.

I have hunted leopard with hounds and it is about the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Interested parties make want to take advantage ASAP because this type of hunt may not be around for much longer.

Having hunted other game with hounds I would love to try this someday. Sounds like a great hunt.
Just curious about a couple of things though.
Why is there a Dog permit required? Is that like a stamp you get on your licence for the method of hunting? Just curious.
Also, do the hounds "cold trail" the leopard until they find it or do you put them on a "hot" track? Just curious to know how it's done over there.

When I did it in Bots you found a nice track, trackers stayed on it two 1/2 days until it got hot, put the dogs down, dogs ran him about 1/4 mile, we closed and he charged...bang dead with shotgun. Where I was at there were no trees so in Zim it may be different. Most exciting hunt I have been on.

when i hunted in the Kalahari(Botswana), the PH hung some impala in the few small scraggly trees in the area prior to my arrival and had 2 males on bait when i arrived. the second morning when we were checking baits a tom was up in the tree when we arrived at daybreak. put the dogs out immediately and bayed him up in the blackthorn 30 minutes later( he bayed up twice but took off before we could get there). third time he stood his ground and charged when we arrived on scene. i suppose in Zim they may be more likely to tree or run into caves but they don't have that option in the desert.

The only thing I would do different if I had the opportunity again, is use a pistol.

Yep, there are people out there campaigning against hound hunting.

and he has been vehement in his posts here-although he is apparently part owner of a game ranch(private hunting estate?) in Zambia, where one must assume animals are hunted "behind the wire"."All animals should be treated with respect and hunting them purely and ethically is a privilege"- unless they are plains game, in which case game ranch hunting is OK. SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT OF MORAL IMPERATIVES??? if the private game ranch mentioned in the letter's signature is not game fenced, then i apologize for the inference- in any case, to each his own.

They look for fresh tracks from the night before and then put the hounds on the trail. At times they hang baits so that they can pick up very fresh tracks from the bait site and follow them. Every hunt is different it can be an hour or several hours before they catch up with the Leopard.

is Munyamadzi (sp?) in zambia fenced?

i am assuming since it is a private hunting estate( per his signed letter posted above that) it is fenced but i don't know that for a fact. it is hard to believe that a private hunting area damn near anywhere in southern Africa would not be fenced.

I apologize for getting this post off track, but if hunting with hounds or situations that artificial light were part of an operation / service that I offered, I sure would want to know that "One of Us" was working internationally to get them banned.

The letter that was posted here from then the African Sporting Gazette was extracted from some dialogue when I was corresponding with the publisher in early 2009. It has been edited and I presume to sensationalize this issue. Note I had my subscription pulled because of my stance on this subject and their persistent advertising of canned Lion.
