Interior Grizzly Hunts

I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m James Smith Registered Guide # 128878 and I’ve been guiding in Alaska for 11 years. I’ve been very fortunate to have guided for some of the best outfitters in the state, Dennis Harms, Gus Lamoureux and a few more that I continue to work for on exclusive guide areas on kodiak island and in The Brooks Range. I also guide in the western and northwest parts of Alaska.

I’ve started my own business targeting interior grizzly bears. My hunts take place after my spring brown bear hunts at Frazer Lake, Kodiak, Alaska. Below is a write-up about my grizzly hunts. Please feel free to reach out to Faisal Al Zaid (I’ve hunted with several times), Jim wojciehowski(Frostbite) and Brett Barringer who are my friends and are very active on this forum.

I’ve been hunting in this GMU in the Northwest part of Alaska for 10 years with high success. However, I decided to move to the north where I’ve been because of the remoteness, little to no pressure and high bear populations that this area has to offer. We have done well because of this. Our hunts occur during both the Spring and Fall.

Spring Grizzly hunts occur during the months of May and June. We offer both Base Camp and Backpack style hunts or a combination of both. Our area is very conducive to the progressive style manner of backpack hunting because of the long open ridge tops that we land on, that being said there are multiple vantage points where sitting and glassing for long periods of time over the country is very effective as well.

Spring is the breeding time for grizzly. With the long open ridge tops this country has to offer this allows us to see Boars that push sows to the top from afar. Most of the time this gives us ample amount of time to seal the deal whether it be a few hours or a couple days later.

This area has a track record for producing some the largest Boone & Crockett grizzly bears in Alaska. We are harvesting bears between 7.5ft to 8.5ft. With a very high bear population, professional guides, good camp gear and food and a great time hunters walk away with a once in a lifetime experience.

James Smith

I know James well. I have not hunted with him because we live here and do not need his guiding services.

That said, I known Faisal has hunted with him personally. I've talked with Faisal many times and he absolutely loved hunting with James.

Hopefully, Faisal can show up and tell us what he thinks of James.

Cheers
J&J

Welcome to the forum James! James is a good dude and an experience guide. I wouldn't hesitate to book with him if you're looking for a huge grizzly.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Looks interesting, but you better read the rules about posting hunts or you risk getting your hand slapped.

James has been my guide on a number of occasions. we have taken Dall in the Brooks range, Moose in the Yukon and brown bear and mountain goat on Kodiak Island.
he's hard working and takes pride in getting his clients results.
I plan to do the hunt he has advertised here next year if life returns to normal.
