Outfitter cancelled on me

My outfitter called yesterday and said that he lost his lease for the area he had set aside for cow elk hunts. He would either return my money or we could go to another area. The other area was a rougher place with a lot lower percentage of cow kills. I am going to get the refund.

At this late date do any of you have any suggestions that are reasonably priced for a cow elk hunt in southeastern Colorado or northeastern New Mexico? I know most of the quality places will be full but thought I would ask.

Thanks.

You could try Red Canyon Ranch, near Moriarty, NM. It's owned by the Ansley family and they are good people. I haven't hunted there but I've seen their place...lots of elk. Might be full but worth a phone call. 575-472-1134

This is a really bad time of year to loose a lease for an outfitter.

I agree but things like that happen. Now to find someone that has had a late customer cancellation.

The outfitter said most of the people he had to call were not as understanding as I had been.

You can give Jerry Stanley a call in New Mexico. He has some ranches in Taos and in Mora County with landowner permits. I hunted with him the last few years and will be with him on Nov. 1, with my daughter. Some of his cow hunt are affordable and loaded with elk.

Not many elk in South EAST Colo.
Think you're likely mistaken or mistyped that part.

Lot's of 'em in the So. West half though. Borders NM's best areas too.

I know nothing about seasons in NM. IF they're longer than CO's 5 days, best to go there.
Especially since you're coming from such a distance.

Here's some up to date personal info you should consider. It's been damned dry and still having temps of 95-97 in this area. Most places, unless there's heavy early snows up high, the elk stay up where it's cool. IF it was me, I wouldn't consider coming that distance this year. UNLESS and until the snows start falling hard up high. Lot's of areas unless the heavy snows fall early, there's mighty few elk. I highly recommend you discuss this with anyone you talk to about hunting with.
AND I'd sure not want to plan on any early season either state. Wait til the last seasons, and pick one with the most hunting days too. Elk take time to get nearly always. This nonsense of 3 & 5 day seasons half dozen times like CO has. Is solely income production, they're sure not concerned about you filling your tag. They just want your NR big buck tag money.

Mighty few years the kill ratio tops 20%, that means 80% of tags go unfilled. Something to give a lot of consideration to, especially if you're not flush with bucks to blow.

Good luck.

George

Thanks to everyone that has made a suggestion. I am going to be on the phone to each and every one of them.

Georgeld I appreciate the update on the current weather conditions out there. You will add another question to what I already normally ask when I am talking to an outfitter.

Crazyhorseconsulting gave the correct answer to boarkiller.

The guide I have hunted with since 1992 in northwest Colorado has been losing properties for the past 10 years or so due to those properties changing ownership and in most cases the new owners are from California and oppose hunting!
