The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority has just contacted the Ethiopian Professional Hunter’s Association regarding some problem lions in the area around Bonga, Ethiopia. This is an area SW of Jimma. Several hundred head of cattle have been killed in the past months. A hunt needs to be urgently scheduled to try and resolve this problem in the next 30 days. Current information states that there are numerous lions involved, both male and female so the chances of having to shoot multiple animals of either sex is likely. A hunter will be required to purchase a minimum of one lion License ($4,000) prior to the hunt and will subsequently be allowed to export one of the culled lions. Which lion is exported will be the hunters’ choice. Additional lions can be exported with the additional purchase of more licenses. The safari will be conducted by Sisay Shewamen of Shield & Spear International Safaris. Sisay has conducted these type of hunts in the past in Southern Ethiopia. Anyone interested should contact me immediately. This safari must take place as soon as possible..... $ 25,200 ( there is a 21 day minimum) $ 3,780 VAT $ 2,100 Community Conservation fees $ 630 Scout fees $ 200 per rifle imported $ 4,000 lion license --------------------------------- $35,910 =========== Rich Elliott Post Office Box 180 A, Crossville, IL 62827 USA Tel: +1 (618) 966 3563 Fax: +1 (618) 966 3006 Cell: +1 (812) 781 0515 Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

What does a regular hunt cost? I am not very knowing in it but is this not still about a normal price? It sure would be a fun hunt to be able to shoot a few lions though!

average price on a Lion hunt starts at $45,000 as a rule. This is the best deal I've seen, especially for the opportunity to take multiple Lions. Whoever takes this will surely have some stories to tell. Thanks David. I would love to read the hunt report. Too bad the average joe like me can't afford to do a hunt or 2 like this in my lifetime. It would be a blast!

It would be a shame if all the offending lions were younger than 6 so they would have to be left alone ..

Sorry but the age limitation (nor sex limitation) doesn't apply in this case. I'm always sorry to see this happen. The lions are killing cattle. There's millions of cows in Ethiopia. More than enough to spare but of course the owners don't see it that way. The hunt sold about 2 hours after I posted it. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

I believe this might be the report you are looking for. Last month I told you about some problem lion hunts that had come on line in Eth iopia. I’ve since gotten some feedback about these hunts, indicating that these are far from a slam dunk. Hunter Winston Stalcup sent me the following report upon returning from a lion hunt in the Bonga zone of the Kaffa Province: “I have successfully hunted lions before in multiple African countries. Traditional methods involve tracking and baiting, usually near limited water sources. None of this applies to the Bonga lions. “The habitat is a rain forest, where visibility is non-existent. The forest is lush and thick, and small streams are abundant; water is everywhere. It rains about every day. The terrain is very steep and slippery. There are no roads, only foot paths and mule trails. People have moved into this inhospitable landscape and established permanent residence, so the area is rich in domestic cattle, goats, mules and horses. The primary problem is encroachment on the lions’ remaining habitat; shooting a few lions will not solve their problem. “The area the lions wander is vast. If a lion hits a cow 25 kilometers away, you are lucky to hear about it within two days. The critical flaw in our strategy was the failure of the lions to stay with the kill. Livestock is so abundant that they simply feed and move on. “So, you are up against a stacked deck; tracking and baiting don’t work. The probability that you intercept one or more lions while out walking, day or night, is very low. Based on a good effort for 10 days with Sisay Shewamen of Shield and Spear Safaris, it is my belief that the Ethiopian Government’s proposition that lions are numerous is a major exaggeration. I did not see a lion, didn’t hear a lion and saw one track about two or three days old. I believe there are a few lions in the Bonga region; not numerous by any measure. “I could only hunt for 10 days due to other commitments. For the hunter who may be interested in this adventure, plan to stay for the full 21 days and good luck.”

Yes, I noted that as well. I wonder if the change of mind had anything to do with the outcome of the hunt - at least as far as the hunting report filed is concerned?? I also wondered how many of the issues listed as negative in the hunting report were known up front?? I admit it will not be every day one finds an opportunity to hunt *multiple* lions on one license. On the other hand, if the chance of taking just a single lion is very low (or practically non-existent, according to the hunting report), I guess I could also offer hunts for multiple lions in Switzerland. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... How much per diem and what is the trophy fee? xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. The rest of the story... "Booking agent Rich Elliot (618-966- 3563; ervs@shawneelink.com) says the report he received from safari operator Sisay Shewamen of Shield & Spear International Safaris is in line with Stalcup’s. While problem lions have killed more than 80 domestic animals, the terrain and conditions, as described by Stalcup, make it exceedingly challenging to kill one of these cats. “I experienced this kind of situation myself on a lion cull hunt in an area called Maze back in 1991,” says Elliott. “Some of these cull hunts in the past have been okay, but others were similar to the above. In retrospect, the hunts involving man-eaters have been mostly successful. The ones with only livestock killed were generally not.” I've been in NW Ontario (fishing) for a few weeks. Spoke with Winston just before leaving and Sisay as well so I knew what was going on. The Hunting Report pretty well covered it. Rich Elliott Rich Elliott Ethiopian Rift Valley Safaris

You have a good reputation Rich, and you are certainly not trying to talk yourself out of a problematic hunt. That speaks for you. Pity if the hunt was not what was expected. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon...
