Andrew Baldry has a lion on quota for '11 on his Munyamadzi Estate on the Luangwa in Zambia. This will be the only lion hunted there in '11 so the chances of success are very high and from the discussions here on AR I think it would be safe to assume that your PH willl not let you shoot anything but a mature lion.

Munyamadzi is private land with a beautiful permanent camp right on the river. The whole Munyamadzi experience is very personal with the whole camp, area and staff at your disposal. I'm very much looking forward to visiting Munyamadzi in '12.

The Luangwa itself is my favorite hunting area in Africa and provides that "Classic" safari experience in spades.

August dates are open and lion/leop is available or just lion. Your choice.

Pricing is unique in that the initial price is a very fair one but if you are not successful on the lion you will be refunded 40% of the daily fees. That is a very very fair pricesystem!

Not that I'm in a position to drop $40K on a hunt, but this seems like a smoking deal.

The +-$10K discount if no "trophy" lion is found is an outstanding way to structure things.

Andrew, you know how I feel about Zambia and the Luangwa Valley. After I return from my tuskless with Chifuti this September we may have to make a plan.

And this area of the Luangwa has some huge Bushbuck. I do not have all the photographs but the hunters took Waterbuck, Hippo, Roan and a host of lesser game over ten days. The Lion was seen on day two and shot on day three mid morning.

The Danish clients (who will be my reference) saw Lion every day during the safari. I think the final count was 25 plus.

Yeah, I know about the Luangwa's Bushbuck. I took a new world record with a handgun there in 2004; think he has since been beaten and is now #2/22 overall. Happened 30 minutes after I first spotted him and told my partner to go after him as he was a monster. They lost him on the stalk and I snapped a shot off when next I saw him and he was in the salt.

I could be wrong but if I recall when he emailed me while I was checking references he said there were so many Lions you had trouble getting Leopard on bait.

This was true and the Lions just hung around the bait trees. Our Lions are also famous for their tree climbing abilities.

Tanzania offers a "shoot on credit" situation and nothing is ever guaranteed though some dodgy buggers might go that far in securing the hunt - it is hunting after all and unless one expects to go home with the shopping list fully ticked off the best place would be to go to SA or some other places in Zambia where Lion, for example, are guaranteed.

Yes I have pics, but as I've said in the past, I don't post them on the internet. If we can get our emails to work, I'll send it to you.

You'll recall my Zambia Lion from that safari was a Zambia record and was number 10 or 11 in the world. I did post a pic of him on AR some time ago as an exception to my rule. I also scored a #3 Puku w/handgun on that trip. That really was an excellent safari, probably my best. Additionally, my take included Kafue Lechwe, Black Lechwe, Tsessebe, Hyena, Sitatunga, Oribi and a couple Buffalo. Oh, and three stitches done in the field by flashlight to close the scope bite from firing my .458Lott prone from a tree stand to get my Lion. And yes, I knew I would get cut shooting that caliber from the prone position, but I wanted that Lion and had come close to falling out of a very high tree stand some nights before.

As a retired booking agent, I know how it works and I never said I expected a refund, as I didn't. Doesn't mean I wouldn't have thought it fair and decent to offer a refund of part of the very high daily rates x21 charged for a Lion safari in Tanzania.

A defined Lion hunt comes at a cheaper rate (and fewer days) but will obviously limit you at going for Lion and highly unlikely you will find Leopard or Elephant included on the license as will there be a limit on PG species.
And yes, I will side with you on the daily rates being higher; this has been discussed extensively before on other forums and the reasons have been highlighted.

Nothing is guaranteed when hunting free ranging Lion. I for one have a problem with taking someones hard earned and not being able to produce the goods. This pricing system also takes the pressure off the PH to shoot any Lion.

The client is simply downgraded and the tag is sold at a discount to another.

I did this two years ago when we first took over Munyamadzi as I was unsure of the quantity and quality of Lion. I turned down a couple and the client went home happy with his Leopard and a host of other trophies. The next hunter shot the Lion.

It also eliminates the question in the clients mind, "what incentive does my ph have to be successful on this hunt when if we don't he can sell the hunt again later this season?". I think it is a great idea that creates a positive business environment for all concerned.

A couple of 21 day safaris without scoring a Lion will cost you dearly.

I had a client that did three in Tanzania before he connected in Zambia. He was so desperate to get his Lion that he disobeyed my instructions and wounded it. We were on foot and the Lion was only some 30 paces from us, lying down.

This is the result and the bullet hit brush and broke up into 5 pieces - back leg and gut. The Lion was shot after it charged some 24 hours later.

Interesting you mention Thor my PH in Luangwa. This was one of the Lions which charged him and he managed to get in a killing shot at the end.
