Alaska Glacier Mountain Outfitters is running a drop camp caribou hunt program in Brooks Range for the month of Aug '14-'15.

The best caribou hunting in Alaska is in the Brooks Range now with 700,000 animals divided between 3 main herds and these guys know where to find them.

AGMO is only supplying the flying. otherwise this hunt is completley DIY. They will provide detailed gearlist and info sheet. If you follow these you'll have a great hunt.
Recommendation is to book 7 days to include the day in and day out but you can book any length trip you want but meat spoilage may be a consideration.

Pricing:

Charter Umiat to drop camp $1900 per person. Min 2 persons and 1 caribou each. $1000 for each additional caribou.
Flight from Deadhorse to Umiat $1800 RT for plane.

Hunting license $85
Caribou tag $325

Contact me anytime wit hyour questions.

Let me look into this. just checked and I'm afraid you as a non resident alien would need a guide for any big game hunting.

No. Any alien must be accompanied by a guide regardless of species.

Brett, Larry and Mark, I take that the guide will have to hold a valid state license or the like to guide an alien, or how is this determined ?

They need to be a state licensed hunting guide allowed to operate by the land owner where the hunt is being conducted.

huntfish,

What you might consider is a 3x1 guided caribou hunt which is nearly $4,000 less per person than a 1x1. PM me if your interested.

Gotta love a DIY hunt where they charge an extra grand if you shoot an additional caribou

The extra $1,000 covers the extra super cub flight to get it out.

Bill,

Sorry I didn't make that clear. As Dog Man said the extra $1,000 is for an extra meat flight.

Me and a buddy did this hunt in 2012 with Glacier Mountain. We got our bulls and had a great experience.

Video of our hunt.

i am getting old. i remember 20 years ago when Rust flying service would fly you from AK to the Lake Clark area for $500 on a drop off/DIY hunt for bulls in the Mulchatna herd. great times... i really did have a lot of fun on these types of DIY hunts( that's why i am headed to Cameroon in 6 weeks). for those looking for a bit of adventure( and maybe to see if you have the right stuff to cut it) i HIGHLY recommend this type of adventure.

that's the plan. i learned my lesson the hard way a few months ago in the Caprivi. i do think that very hunter should make a do-it-yourself hunt at least once in their career- and caribou hunts are a great way to give it a go. it really is quite an experience to judge a trophy, shoot something, cape it, salt the cape, and haul the bugger back to camp with no one to look over your shoulder or lend a hand. best of luck, Mark, on selling these hunts. anyone who does it will feel a real sense of accomplishment. BTW, Dog Man, great video and it brought back some really nice memories of Super Cubs and good times in AK from the AK peninsula to the north of Tok.

jdollar,

Your right! This type of hunt can be very rewarding and I've done many of them for caribou and moose. On this type of hunt you are completely responsible for the success of the hunt, your personal comfort and ultimately your survival if the weather turns completely horrible.

If a hunter has never done anything like this I highly recommend it. Just being in the wildest place in the US on your own is memorable expereience in itself.

Completely agree. My DIY moose was the most rewarding hunt I have done in years!

Totally agree Mark. There's no other feeling than watching that bush plane leave the very first time you do a fly-in. You are on your own!!

Amen to that. and when me and a few buddies did it back in the dark ages( circa 1992-1997), there were no sat phones, cellphones or ham bones. when that bush pilot went wheels up, you were completely incommunicado until the pick up date- and that was entirely weather dependent. these really are true adventures in the finest sense of the word!

I agree completely, my 2009 DIY moose float in NE Alaska was probably my best hunt ever. The 13 packloads of moose meat added to the sense of accomplishment. It's just too damn bad that non-res can't DIY hunt interior grizzlies, they were everywhere!

Mark,

How many people can you take per plane for the trip from Deadhorse to Umiat?
