I represent Ben Boon/Grand Canyon State outfitters. In addition to his mule deer in AZ he has the landowner tags on a 55,000 acre ranch in NM with a very healthy elk population. On this ranch he has 3 cow elk tag still available for '11 and he can let them go for $500 each. This is strictly a DIY hunt and neither Ben or the ranch will provide anything except access to the ranch.

Ben says this is a great opportunity for archery tackle but any weapon is legal.

Nov-Dec is ideal for this hunt.

Mark posted the ranchers name and phone number. If interested give him a call and ask him directly any questions you have as to when, where, how and how much. Sounds simple enough to me??

I just got an anonymous email from a guy about this....great info BTW.....and won't have a clue what this year holds for me until the drawing.

This much I do believe....New Mexico is the premium place to hunt elk and can be a tad spendy too....I have several possibilities and just need to see how they play out.....but am thankful for all the advice folks have shown me... I still have a place near Watrous that can be a marvelous opportunity.....just get there when the time is right!

I am the guy that has jumped on this opportunity! I can't wait! I am going after a cow elk with my 1874 Sharps!

Thanks Mark, A life long friend and I are going together and we always have a blast. The last time we hunted out west together was in the Pine Ridge area of NW Nebraska, brought home 4 big muleys (2 apiece). This should be fun!

When you turn 2 Mississippi boys loose where there is game, usually their will be meat on the table very soon! (I hope I did not just jinx myself) LOL

All kinds of stuff can happen in cyberspace. A number of times people have sent me messages that I did not receive for one reason or another. Send me your regular e-mail and I'll ask Ben to contact you. I doubt seriously that he has blown you off.

When this notice was originally posted I sent Ben an email and did get a reply.

Since March 28, when it was clear that I wouldn't know until June if I was drawn for a bull tag in New Mexico, I decided to try to lock in some hunt even if it meant two elk in one year.

I can only assume that all the cow permits were taken by that time but tried twice by hitting the reply command and asked if one or more cow permits were available......and no reply.....twice.....so the email worked once and I did get a reply.... but not again!

Sorry Mark but I can only assume that since there is nothing to sell we just don't believe in replying!

All it takes is a simply reply saying "Sorry, they are all sold."

At this stage Further communications are not relevant and I will assume something happened other than my feeling that I was "no longer worthy of communication". I'll let it pass!!!!

BTW.....I'm still interested in a cow tag if one shows up somewhere.

I do have friends with a ranch north of Santa Fe and will contact them for a tag even though I don't like to do business with my friends.

No...I sold my right to the tag to another poster here....I had too much trouble with Ben in communications.....and now believe that others that paid for tags might have an interesting story!

I purchased the tag from Vapodog. As the time for my hunt approached, Ben Boon advised me that the extreme drought in New Mexico had resulted in no elk on the ranch. I believe he said three bull hunters on the ranch had not seen a single elk. He gave me the option of a full refund or rolling my tag to next year. I chose to roll my tag to next year. I greatly appreciated Ben's honesty and plan on pursuing a cow next year.
