Outfitter : Kanzutu Reserve Limited
Professional Hunter: Leon Kachelhoffer Email: kanzutu@gmail.com Mobile: +260 978 259103 Postal Address: P.O. Box 36773, Lusaka, Zambia, Africa HUNTING AREA The Kanzutu Reserve is located in the legendary Luangwa Valley of Eastern Zambia. Ideally situated in the Sandwe Open Area between the Sandwe and Lower Lupande concessions, Lower Lupande is one of the most renown concessions in Zambia. The Reserve shares a western boundary with the South Luangwa National Park, its spans 81 550 Acres of pristine Luangwa habitat. The terrain varies from large mountain ranges to the valley floor incorporating open savanna, thickets, miombo and mophane woodlands with large stands of wild bamboo. Resident species: Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Roan, Kudu, Zebra, Warthog, Bushpig, Impala, Bushbuck, Common Duiker, Klipspringer. All can be hunted with the exception of the cats, Elephant and Klipspringer. There is a possibility to secure a single Elephant permit and Klipspringer. Cats remain closed until Government lifts the ban. This Reserve is a Community based initiative where the local Community are partners in the joint venture. They receive direct benefits and revenue from all tourist based revenue-generating activities and as importantly the Community is also actively involved in the management/conservation of the Reserve. The concept is to create a sense of ownership, belonging and involvement of the rural community. This is provide the necessary incentive to the Community to play their part in conservation. So far this has had the desired effect in that rural people have are starting to take note of the development, support and appreciate the initiative. The Company has been working on the project for over two and half years and has been carrying out extensive anti-poaching on the Reserve ever since. The wildlife numbers have reached a stage now that we are fully confident will produce good hunting results that will continue to improve year by year through the implementation of a responsible management strategy. The area is really wild and offers a truly adventurous hunt. The road network on the Reserve is only being expanded now. Large pieces of country will be preserved, as there are several valleys and areas that will remain inaccessible by vehicle. This will undoubtedly appeal to the adventurous spirit! The focus of Kanzutu Reserve is to conserve the land and protect the wildlife living on the land, in sustainable manner hand in hand with the Sandwe Community for their benefit and that of generations to come. As a destination to deliver a natural and authentic hunting experience in a true wilderness setting while offering the hunters peace of mind and the opportunity to be selective in the their quest. THE CAMP The camp is built in East African style with classic safari tents. Each tent will be furnished with all necessary amenities close at hand. Wow - that's a reasonable offer on what's considered to be a fair sized piece of land. What's the TF on Sable and what should be ones expectations in the horn department when talking about roan and sable? Thanks

There aren't any sable in the Luangwa Valley, AR MAN.

AR MAN, Sandyhunter is correct, no Sable however very good Roan. You can reasonably expect a Roan of about 26" and up. This is going on the Roan I have personally seen. Also Thor (poacher458) of Munyamadzi has taken some excellent Roan and he's area is part of the same lower south luangwa valley system. These are wily antelope and make for a really challenging and satisfying hunt. Roan and Buffalo quality will be excellent and will alone make for a great trip. I sense that the kudu quality will be excellent too. Sable can also be arranged as a separate/add on trip.

Hi Leon, Glad to see your concession is coming together, it sounds exciting. As we talked about before, as soon as the New Mexico hunting draws are announced at the end of April, I will know what I will be able to do as far as hunting with you in Zambia. I am not usually successful in our local hunting draws, but we will see. Good luck, Gordon

I'll add that taking a roan is a much bigger accomplishment than shooting a sable. As Leon has noted, roan are typically very wary animals. Sable, on the other hand, are sort of stupid. They may be more conventionally beautiful than a roan, and they're certainly an important trophy to take, but hunts for them are typically far less challenging. Also, a good price on a roan in southern or eastern Africa is very hard to come by. They usually require a 21-day license.

Sandyhunter +1. Roan is one of the toughest antelope trophies to bag right up there with the best of them. South Luangwa offers some of the best Roan hunting in wilderness areas wihtin their natural range. 27" plus are not uncommon in South Luangwa.

I agree. I hunted mine years ago in the Caprivi, where they got one tag at the time. It was a marvelous tracking hunt. The bulls favored waist-high grass and would stake out a territory and remain there, except every 2-3 days when they had to drink. We would pick up tracks in the morning and follow for hours, never knowing how far they might have traveled during the night. Once they knew they were being followed, they acted like eland and would stop to rest or feed on the far side of a clearing, and spot us coming before we saw them. They also walked with the wind at their backs at times. Very clever and a great hunt. My bull was not with cows/young, and had the tip of another roan's horn stuck in his massive neck (I had him mounted like this). Can you imagine the ferocity required to splinter and break off the tip of a horn in the neck of another combaatant? When I hunted in the Lower Lupande in 2005, they were not on quota but we were seeing tracks in the escarpment which was not being hunted hard if at all. In Cameroon when hunting Lord Derby, roan were relatively plentiful and were usually shot as a target of opportunity, and I couldn't help but to think what a wonderful hunt was being missed. Good luck with the area, and I look fwd to some reports from the field this year.

Lets hope you can add a cat into the mix this year. Opening up a new area that has not been hunted before is going to be very exciting indeed. Committing to a partnership with a rural community is admirable. That makes two of us mate. ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal
