Season starts August 16-31 which is a great time to get out of the heat and enjoy the cool mountains of New Mexico. We also have a fall season that starts Sept. 23- Nov. 15. We have a full service bear camp equipped with everything needed to make your hunt comfortable and successful. The hunting will be done behind our pack of well trained hounds. Mules and horses will be available for hunting wilderness areas. Most of our hunts will be conducted in the Ruidoso,NM area. If quotas are filled in that area we will hunt in the Pecos, Grants, or Gila areas. We have hunted all of these areas in the past and have had good luck in all of them. Myself and my guides are expert houndsman and have tons of experience hunting Bear and Mountain Lion in the mountains of New Mexico. 5-day bear hunts include meals, lodging, full guide services, and trophy preparation. Transportation to and from the hunt not included. Limit of 2 hunters per 5 day hunt. Hunt cost $3200. Non-resident Black Bear License is $260, Game Hunting License $65 Habitat Stamp $5 Habitat Management& Access validation $4 Vendor Fee $1 For a total of: $335 References available. Just an FYI. I used to guide in Pecos for bear and lion. This is a gorgeous area and has very good bear and lion numbers. A bear hunt with hounds can be one of the most physically demanding hunts you've ever been on. But the toil is worth the reward. If you've ever wanted a real life western bear hunt. This is it!

Is this a dog hunt only or is it possible to spot/stalk or bait hunt?
|

It is illegal to bait bears in NM. I'll let Joe answer as to the spot and stalk thing but In the west spot and stalk isn't very productive for bears.

Most hunts are done with the aid of dogs. If a hunter is interested in leaving the hounds at camp and trying a spot and stalk hunt I have no problem with that. We are here to hunt bears and please clients. So if you are interested in a spot and stalk hunt with the option of hounds, we have no problem with that. There is also an archery only spot and stalk season from September 1-22. Baiting is illegal here in New Mexico. Thanks. Joe Troyer Lil Joe's Big Game Hunting (575) 707 3727 3056 N. That's the bear my bud Bobby shot. There is quite a story behind the retreival of that bear. IIRC they shot the bear way up on the side of a mountain way off from the road just about dark. Just Bobby and Joe. The bear was a brute, prolly close to 300 lbs. He rolled downhill and would have gone all the way except he lodged against a tree. Now ya'll know how easy it is to manhandle 300 pounds of dead meat while standing on a 30 degree incline in a slagpile. I think it was about 11 PM or even mid-nite before Joe got 100 lbs of head and hide to the top. Now mind you they hadn't eaten or drank anything since well before dark. Neither one had a flashligt. Much of this area had been burnt over by forest fires and had dead pines and other trees that have fallen that you can't go over and have to go over, plus briar and brambles. Needless to say they were cut up and scratched tired puppies by the time they got to the top. Joe spread out the cape to dry, telling Bobby there was no way they could get it back all the way to the truck that night. Bobby told Joe he was not leaving that hide there and was going to sit there all night. IIRC Joe finally had to promise Bobby that if anything happened to the hide he would give him a free hunt, but that they couldn't stay on the side of the mountain all night. It was about 2 AM when they got back. I had just laid down on my bunk when Bobby comes into the tent. Was he jacked. Kept me up till four when I had to get up for my hunt. Between exhaustion and elation, he was almost in tears. A hunter was born that night. Later on that day they went and retrieved the hide pictured. Best bear of the four we took that week. Beginners luck I guess. Bobby has since been to Africa, taken elk and bison here in the states. I think he has talked to Joe about doing a mountain lion hunt. Joe may or not want to chime in on whether my recollection is accurate or not. I, and three other guys hunted with Joe in 2012. Four guys, four bears. I had a ball. Here is the report I published here at AR on a thread started by Bob Connell, proprietor of the Texas Predator Posse, and the organizer of that hunt. http://forums.accuratereloadin...351048871#7351048871 My son hunted with Joe last year. Here is his bear. He also was able to add a "meat hunt" on a cow elk. I had two freezers full of bear and elk I'm still eating on. I don't know how ya'll gauge success on a hunt. If I get to hang with some good guys, hunt for several days and see some new and beautiful country, like the guides, eat good food, I consider that a worthy investment, whether I take an animal or not. Best, GWB

For you guys that haven't done a hound bear hunt I find it is one of the most exciting ways to hunt bears. Then spot and stalk then bait. Hounds are the way my son and I plan to fill are Wis. tags this year.

I'm interested in the bear hunt for my two sons with me going as a non-hunting observer (hang out in camp with a single malt and a cigar lol) Seriously though, please let me know. We would need to go Aug 16th as my son's college classes start Aug 25th. Sounds good! I got my brown bear, so it's my two sons turns. They're well behaved young men (one a former Army Ranger) and I'm sure we will all be good company.
