I am 99% sure it happens much more than folks realize on domestic flights in the US. Heck, I was checking into a hotel and found my Swiss Army knife in my briefcase. Lots of tales on gun boards about folks flying, getting to their destination, and finding loaded magazines in their carry-ons etc. Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.

translated by google: 76-year-old Norwegian did not know his gun was loaded when it went off. It was a quick verdict on the 76-year-old Norwegian who was to blame for both an aircraft and an airport employee was hit by a shotgun blast. When the man was made in Judge Guard in Copenhagen, the judge decided that the case was so well-lit that could deliver judgment immediately. The man, who after some discussion with his counsel chose to plead guilty, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment. It was also infamous shotgun confiscated. The gun went suddenly off: It was Monday night, the man's shotgun suddenly went off when a baggage handler put weapons box that the gun was in, up on a luggage trolley. The pellets tore weapon box apart, hit a metal plate on the vehicle and continued to the wing of the plane before they ricocheted and eventually hit the employee. He was hit in the upper arm, the lower back and the back of the thigh. A colleague who was standing nearby, was firmly ringing in the ear of the crash from the double-barreled gun. In court explained the Norwegian that he packed shotgun and a rifle down in the special carrying case. He had not used the shotgun for 15 years and did not consider that there were cartridges in. When he checked the gun into the airport in the United States, he wrote in a statement that it was not loaded. The man explained that he is a former hotel owner, but now retired. He has had the weapons to do for several years, and has also been a member of the Home Guard in Norway. Today he lives in Colorado in the United States, but he was on his way back to Norway to go for reindeer hunting and visit family. text from ritzau

RE; Carry-ons. Last flight from JFK to Phoenix US Airways let early waves of boarders carry on ANYTHING,regardless of size and number of items. They pain NO attention to size/# of item criteria (ONE bag of limited size and one "personal "item ). When it came time for us to board we were advised that overhead storage bins were full and we were forced to check our LEGAL roller carry-ons which were unlocked and which contained expensive cameras, binoculars etc !! All because they failed to follow there own rules !! On top of that ,on a 4-hour flight which spanned the noon hour they failed to serve a lunch AND provided NO complimentary snack, not even a bag of pretzels or peanuts !! US Airways sucks. I will NEVER darken the door of one of their aircraft again. They also committed numerous other sins, too numerous to relate here...

Travel note : SAA and likely other airlines on international flights to New York, and Washington/Dulles have instituted an extra pre-boarding security check at the gate. This involves removal of shoes,a pat down and another inspection of carry on items. Be aware of this and the time required as the lines are LONG. This also scrambles any defined boarding order.
