Do any of you take drinking alcohol with you to Africa? If so, how do you transport it to keep it intact? Is it legal to transport it at all? | ||

i take a bottle or 2 along. usually take it in plastic flasks, since i trust baggage handles so much with glass bottles. perfectly legal, but must go in baggage not carry on | |||

I have placed up to 6 of the airline size minatures in my 1gal plastic bag and never had a problem. It is my understanding that certain Central American airlines frown on the practice. On a return flight to the US from OZ bought a pint at the duty free shop and had no issues. Yackman | |||

We always hit duty-free in JoBerg and max out on booze to take to camp. Just hand carry it, after you've gone through security for the last time, and you're good. But it doesn't work the other way. If I buy South African wine in JoBerg I can hand carry it on the plane to Washington, but lose it when I re-do security in D.C. to fly to Vegas. Free beer on international flights. I also place 1 1/2 oz bottles in a ziplock bag domestic with no issues. Just don't let the flight nazi see you adding it to your free coke. Your camp in africa will have cheap vodka, whiskey and scotch. Email your PH with any specific requests. He will arrange it. Stop in duty free before you depart and grab 2 bottles per person. Few months back in Zim, we bought 3 bottles of Zimbabwe's own Admiral's Old Navy Rum.. Made it through the goons at the Bully airport only to have it taken by some "official" in Joburg because it came over international borders.. I tried my damnest to break them as I handed them over to that thug. 2 hit the floor and he caught one.. Damn thick glass, I guess. Thieving pricks. Buy and enjoy in camp whilst incountry.. Don't bother trying to get the stuff back.. it'll just piss you off and you'll be out the money AND your booze. | |||

In August last year, we stopped at the duty free shop in Atlanta before boarding and bought 3 bottles of booze. Not a problem at all taking them with us. Even checked back in the following day heading down to East London, after overnighting at the Afton House in Joburg. We ended up leaving what was left behind the bar. Coming back to the States, they confiscated a couple bottles of water from my buddy who got them on the Delta airplane, go figure! I did bring home some RSA whiskey on my first trip in 2004, but that was before the 3-1-1 rule, which eliminates the possibility of carrying it on with you! See previous paragraph! As Butch says, pack your favorite beverage in plastic flasks in your checked baggage. Most places in Africa will have liquors like gin, scotch, and brandy, but if you insist on American or Canadian whiskey you'd best bring your own. One of my hunting companions who usually drinks only Bacardi rum underestimated his personal needs by taking only a single 750ml with him and ran out two nights before the trip was done. Interestingly enough, he had never even tried Cognac before, but necessity being the mother of invention, he now is a dedicated Cognac drinker. Isn't it amazing how travel broadens one? | |||

We usually buy a bottle in the duty free shops in Atlanta airport and then just carry it in our carry on bag, never had a problem. Good Hunting,  | |||

Just find out how much you can bring into the country. I always get it at the air port at the destination. Costs a few bucks more but saves the problem of carrieing it on the plane. I always do it. Keeps every one happy and the PH's may get a chance to try some thing different. Regards Mark | |||

What LRH270 said  We used to buy Amarula in the duty free shop in Jo'burg's airport. Now we can't get it home. It's half the price of the US cost. I've taken alot of tequila and mescal to Ukraine and brought back wine and the honey-pepper vodka with out any problems ,BUT...it was always in the checked luggage. I travel light. I put a few bloody marys in my belly in the departure lounge. No excess baggage charges for that. Then I chuck a few bottles of Lagavulin among the clothes in the checked baggage. Just keep them in the boxes they're sold in, taped shut. Works every time.  Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||

In my case I will be departing Atlanta for Frankfurt and then on to Windhoek. If I buy booze in ATL will I have any problems in FRA if I have it in my carry-on? | |||
