Scheduled to get my vaccinations for Namibia next Tuesday. My doctor, who has bowhunted South Africa previously, says Typhoid is not necessary. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Seems alot of people get this vaccination. Wondering if I should force the issues or just follow doctor's advice. I am getting HEPA/B and tetanus. ______________________ I don't shoot elk at 600 yards for the same reasons I don't shoot ducks on the water, or turkeys from their roosts. If this confuses you then you're not welcome in my hunting camp. | ||

HEPA/B, tetanus and polio is what I got. Based on what I seen as far as sanitation goes, I wouldn't think typhoid would be necessary. | |||

I got it for zim this year it was easy and cheap compaired to getting sick they have it as a pill set that lasts 5 years now VERITAS ODIUM PARIT | |||

There were virtually no typhoid vaccines available for my 2005 trip as they had all been allocated to the tsunami areas. The travel clinic told me this in advance but they did not seem too concerned as to whether I got one or not. I got lucky and found an oral vaccine. The vaccine is no where near 100% effective any way. Even if you do get it, it's best not to drink water from a water hole with a bloated cow floating in it.  "...Africa. No vaccinations are currently required for Namibia. If you travel north of Windhoek (Etosha, Caprivi, etc.) in the non-winter months, then malarial prophylaxis is recommended. If you want to take a tetnus shot, then take one; but you're probably at more risk fiddling with dirty garden tools in your garage. Rabies is endemic in most of the country, just as it is in the U.S. Since one of the advantages to most African hunting is that you don't have to do the gutting and skinning yourself, your opportunity for rabies exposure is negligible. However, if you'll go to one of those specialized "travel clinics" like my friend did, they'll stick you (quite literally in this case  ) for several hundred dollars in vaccinations for diseases that you couldn't catch rolling around naked in a septic tank. | |||

Since typhus is apparently most commonly spread by "infected" water, I figured better safe than sorry and took the four-pill oral vaccine. I will do it again next time, but will use the needle vaccine. The pills made me pretty uncomfortable for a couple days. | |||

I took the oral in February for Zim. No problems. Is it a risk worth taking? You can be exposed via a number of ways. None are required in RSA, but I use precautions for ticks and any biting insects. Worked 100% so far. Thanks for the replies everyone. Spoke with my doc again about this. I am going to skip the typhoid vaccination but am taking a general antibiotic along. It is recommended for all travelers by the CDC. Never confuse what a country "requires" for what is best for you. Vaccination "requirements" are designed for the general welfare of that country, NOT the traveler. Vaccinations are cheap insurance and prevention. Have a good trip. Hunted Namibia last June,,, I took the Hepatits A/B,, Typhoid shot, couldn't find the oral, and took a Polio booster. Namibia had a Polio outbreak in 2006 and it was reccomended. I took Malaria prophylaxix as well[ Melarone}. I fish in Mexico and South America some so it wasn't a wasted prevention. Better to be in the field than sick looking for fresh ground! you can make more money, you can not make more time | |||
