Heading to SA May 1 with the wife. Hunting for 10 days then touring Kruger. First trip for the wife. Will need to change some dollars to Rand so she can shop. Is the airport the best place? Is there more than one place in the airport to do this? Advice would be much appreciated.

Use your credit card in the shops and ATM's to get some cash. I would avoid getting cash at the airport, instant target for a robbery.

We’re going to a large local market the day before we fly home. I’ve been told that we will need cash (Rand).

On my last trip, I exchanged currency in the international terminal at the Atlanta airport. Then exchanged what I had left on the return trip. Can't recall the name of the exchange service but it's easy to find.

When I was there I was told and experienced, “The U.S. Dollar Speaks Well Here”. I used a CC or good old “Green Backs”.

Spot on...

Watch the money exchange on line and place your order with your bank when you think it is right for you.

I ordered some last october when it was about $14 rand to $1 USD, now it is at $11.50 to $12.00 rand to $1. USD.

Changing money in Joberg will make you a soft target.

If you are a AAA member order through them. It is the best exchange we have found. Better than the banks in most cases. I would sleeve my CCs for security.

I've hunted, toured, shopped and passed through O.R. Tembo in RSA a number of times. I've never exchanged a single dollar. Your credit card and USDs will work fine.

It may cost you five more dollars on the 100 but local US bank is the best. Every little booth in that market will take us dollars. Walk away two times before you buy anything. Most of those items in market can be purchased now on ebay.

The three places that exchange money at the airport do not have that good of security. General public can walk into that part of the airport. If you do exchange at airport, have your PH stand with you and do it after you get your guns so you can go straight to your vehicle.
