I am planning on taking my 30.06 with me to South Africa in August.
It is fitted with a PES sound moderator and I cannot seem to find a definitive answer on whether they are allowed or not - can anyone help?

Any tips on firearms importation in general would be a big help.
I am flying in to Jo-berg from London and then straight up to Polokwane.

Can't say about the sound moderator, but I can say that importing my rifles into SA was one of the easiest times I've ever had. I went on safari back in 2009 and had no trouble what so ever. The police station at J'berg was very polite and things went smoothly. As long as you have your paperwork in order, I wouldn't worry one bit.

When we were there in '06 our PH carried a .270 with some kind of silencer; I assumed it was not a big deal.

Hello,

SA like alot of EU, regulates the crap out of guns, but once you get your permit.
Silencers are like scopes an over the counter accessory.
Remember drooling over them in a gun shop in Paris and SA.
This ofcourse applies to SA residents, but I cannot imagine that you will have an issue with your firearm.

Just wanted to update others on this.

In the end I booked Air 2000 to help me through OR Tambo. After a discussion with them prior to departing and at their recomendation I put the sound moderator in my suitcase and did not arrive with it attached to my rifle. Ann at Air 2000 said that the police can be tricky about them.

Good service and we booked the Rifle through very quickly
