The question why did they seat them apart with an empty seat between them?

So some poor sod can suffer the indignity of being crushed by them??

I agree with Saeed 100%. I doubt that you would find anyone that would want set between those two for four hours. The airlines need to do something about these people that don't fit in one seat, charge them for two seats or something, but don't make other passengers suffer because they won't fit in one seat. My wife and I always book an empty seat between us. Sometimes we get lucky and no one is setting there. If there is, we always give them the choice of any of the seats.

+1. You shouldn’t have to share a seat you pay for with someone too fat to fit in theirs.

We were flying on an Emirates A380.

I was in First Class, and there was a young man there who seem to weigh about 300 kgs!

The stewardess kept asking me what I wanted to eat, and I only ordered salad!

She kept coming back to ask me to eat something.

I told her she might give my food to the other gentleman.

She burst out laughing, and said “we might have to move him to the cargo hold then!” clap

Actually I wish they sold seats according to total weight.

Example.

Economy 80 Kgs total - passenger and luggage. Pay more per kilo.

Business 120 Kgs

First 150 Kgs.

Will work like a charm!

Might even persuade some fat sod to loose weight! sofa

While I am overweight/fat, the issue with me is shoulder size more than belly fat.

I don’t fly straight economy due to the size issue. Try getting 3 guys who fit in the rear on the seats but their shoulders are broad into the same row. The airlines have been reducing all dimensions in their seating for quite some time, and with the profusion of standby fliers, having an open seat is a lost luxury.

My uncle always brought 2 seats due to his size, and about half the time the airlines took the second one away (uncompensated at that) because they had “overbooked” the flight.

Their argument was that he arrived at his destination.

I was there one time when they put this woman next to him and she started complaining. He showed her his two tickets and told her to f- off. The stewardess somehow calmed her down, it that was the last time he flew. He is 6-3, and at the time 325#. The two of us were bumping shoulders before they put her there.

The problem is not the passengers size. It’s the airline and people in general’s entitled attitude.

Yep.

It is the modern entitlement syndrome.

We come across it in many walks of society today.

It is like with crimes.

The criminals have human rights.

The victims have not.

Tell me how if I buy 2 tickets, and the airline oversells the flight and "bumps" my extra seat without paying for it and places someone else there I should have to listen to them bitch about seat overflow?

Like I said, I get paying for more. I don't like tight seats. Instead of weight, why don't we charge by the square inch?

But the average seat size is going down and the average passenger size is going up.

I'd also like to hear how I can shrink my shoulder width with some miracle diet since that is what really doesn't fit.

I get what you are saying, but the airlines are trying to jam more seats on the plane by cutting seat size.

And do you really think a business class seat is 5x as big as the economy seat? That's the cost differential on most US overseas flights, at least the last few times I've gone.

Fat is fat. I am 6' 3" and 250lbs. I am 30lbs overwieght as I live and breath. I fill up an economy seat. Any wider and the folks next to me are cramped. I fly first or economy plus every time these days.

I don't blame that lady. She handled it a bit poorly as the airlines will usually reseat you if possible.

I have often bought 3 seats for 2 fliers. United sold my extra seat and I raised serious issues with them and got a $600 voucher for my trouble. Air New Zealand honored the empty seat with no issues.

When I see the pre-boarders that are FAT and Grossly Obese, I get irritated. The cure - put the fork down!!!! Fat is not a disability, it is lack of self control. Fat is no reason to inconvenience anyone but yourself. If you are FAT or have a BMI over 25, or a waist size over 40"- fly first class or drive or don't go. Otherwise, you will be uncomfortable.

I get it if you are old, or an invalid due to physical issues, but fat is self induced and you should board with everyone else.

Flying is a privilege and not a "right". You are not "entitled" to be accomodated at the inconvenience of others.

Same for the wimps with dogs or cats or "emotional support animals" on planes. I just cannot understand how the airlines think this is a good idea. if you are that emotionally unstable or fragile, don't fly - drive or stay home. I have zero sympathy for you....
Let me get this right - you need a dog or cat to help your emotions???? No way.

If you are blind and the dog is your eyes, fine by me. You can have my seat. But if you are crying over PTSD or some other "trama", you get no pity or consideration from most of us. Grow up.

Also, if you do not like my post.... I really do not want to hear from you via PM. Take your emotional trama to someone who will listen. When I travel the world, there are folks out there who should be tramatized from living in situations the way they do, but your own self pity or made up additions or made up affliction carry no weight. In the USA, we have no poor people. Travel to Africa or Pakistan or Egypt or Indonesia and you will see truly poor people. In the USA your safety net is wide and you do not suffer. Our homeless live better than what I see in Africa and other places, so don't waste time telling me how we have to care for the poor pitiful homeless standing on the street corner asking for money. I don't feel your pain.

No airlines thinks this is a good idea, they are mandated to do it by the Federal Government through the "Americans With Disabilities Act". The airlines hate it and if they had any choice would ban it.

I agree with everything except the reseating part. I fly a lot for work, about 150,000 miles per year. Over the past 2 years, I have asked to be reseated 3 times due to being stuck next to a person weighing at least 350 pounds. One of the guys was an ex-NFL lineman for the Atlanta Falcons. He was about six foot and five inches tall, and had to weigh at or above 450 pounds.

On all three occasions, I was flying in economy plus and sitting in isle seat.
All three times the big people were flying standby and boarded the plane late.
All three times the big people were put in the middle seat.
All three times the plane was sold out,
All three times the airlines told me tough luck!!!

It boggles my mind,.... that they think putting a 400 pound person in a middle seat on a four hour flight is a good idea. Why does that become my problem??

I think 90%+ of these emotional support animals are complete horse shit!!! Most of the time, it is simply idiots that want to travel with their pets. I know one lady that has a letter/prescription for an emotional support dog from her uncle that is a dentist!!!! She laughs about it.

It irritates the shit out of me when I pay extra for economy plus, and still have to share my seat with someone else. I can't even imagine would it would be like in regular economy.

I tell them they are denying my seat and I wan to speak with a supervisor (before the plane leaves). I then get my choice of taking the next flight or getting comped 1/2 my ticket price (which is what I take).

The whole issue does need some attention. I flew from Las Vegas to Phoenix last night. Short flight, but did sit next to a fat guy (I define a fat guy as anyone whose belly sticks out beyond the forward part of the armrest). I will give him credit: he kept his arms folded the entire flight, which made it nice. The fact his belly was big but he didn't splay out beyond the seat was a plus as well.

Maybe it is going to take a lawsuit filed by someone - perhaps a class action? Who knows.

I would love it if airlines sold a row of Econ Plus with two rules: you can't have a pet, and you can't use a seat belt extender.

Airlines are getting with the proverbial murder.

And I love it when one gets one up on them.

We were flying out of Vic Falls, and they were charging everyone for any excess weight.

It was on those days when they had a big stanup scale, with a round dial.

This scale was on the outside of the desks.

While we were waiting our turn, Walter walks out,and brings a suitable size stone.

While the check in person was busy, Walter puts the stone under the part of the scale that moves down.

It stopped at 16Kgs!

All our bags were 16 Kgs each!

And I have no idea how long it took them to find out what had happened clap

Another thing you can do is ask if there are any non-revs on the flight and if there are, ask that they trade with you.

Oh I think I can write a small book on airline stories.

Again, in Zimbabwe.

And again, we were being fleeced for being 1Kgs over the limit.

We saw what they were doing to everyone, and people were scrambling to find US Dollars to pay.

One of my friends, Horst - sadly, he is no longer with us, but many here will remember him as he used to take the best photos on our safari.

I was asking everyone who had US Dollars, when Horst said "give me your passports and tickets and wait here"

I said "what are you going to do?"

He said "Just wait here and let me see what I can do"

He walked up to the check in counter, and we could see he was having a conversation with the man behind the counter, and both were looking back at us.

Our luggage was checked in, and we did not have to pay a penny!

I said to Horst "how did you do that"

He said " just be quiet and let us go in"

When we were in Johannesburg airport waiting for our Emirates flight, Horst came clean on his lies.

Apparently he wrote his name and a false phone number and passed it to the man behind the counter.

Telling him he should come work for Emirates, as he was the secretary to the Chairman of Emirates - me! - who is standing right there waiting to board.

Both were of course white faced lies, but he got what he wanted.

Being obese is considered a handicap, and airlines are forced to try and accommodate them.

I have heard, that if you try to keep the seat armrests down, the attendants will force you to raise them in order to keep the overweight people from being uncomfortable.

I read a story of a young lady who actually passed out due to the constant pressure being exerted on her by two overweight people.

Some people are claustrophobic, but I guess that disability takes second fiddle to overweight people.

One more reason to start flying Business or First Class.

Actually, Southwest makes obese people buy two tickets (or at least they did).

Indeed one must!
With over 3 million miles in the air(2 mil American and 1 mil with Delta) I have seen a few things.

But here is a story of a wide gentleman with whom I travelled some. He was the Phd Vice President inventor of and manager of the computer business which I had just been hired to launch.
He always had three seats in a row booked (two for him and one for me) and we always met for lunch before the flight. We also both ate when on a long flight. We then worked until landing. We usually arrived and checked into our hotel around dinner time. After a toddy, we went to a fine restaurant for dinner. The next day, after a big breakfast, we made our business calls and often took folks to lunch or dinner.

Fortunately, he knew what he was doing and I learned quickly so the business succeeded, he retired and I was promoted.
Two life lessons; Rank has it's privileges and you can spend big if you can succeed big!

I have been on flights where the check in personnel have made life hell for someone, just because they could.

When my turn came, a polite word, telling them all that was bullshit, and I will not stand for the same treatment, and I get in without any hassle.

I find that people in Europe tend to accept whatever they are told by those who think are in charge.

Regardless of how ridiculous that is.
