I have a friend who is going to Africa with me. He is looking for a lightweight lockable ammo box. I have one I bought a long time ago made by MTM that you can put a small lock on. I have been on their website and it looks like it's not available now. May I hear what other people haveor do use?

A small Pelican case is about right and nearly bullet proof.

Is this the one you are seeking? I have a couple that I put TSA locks on for ammo inside my checked luggage.

My favorite is the aluminum Kalispel ammo box.
Tough and light.

I've always used the plastic Cabela's case. It's fine, unless someone has one that is lighter. Last time they weighed by ammo in the box and counted the box toward the 5 kilos. Not the spirit of the rule, but the lightest weight box that satisfies the goons suits me.

I'm going to Namibia on May 22 and taking a Pelican 1200 case.
I have 4 boxes of .300 Weatherby in it, but I could put in 2 more if I needed to.

That looks like a helluva good product at a fantastic price!

Wonder if they're available here in Portugal because I suspect those silly US export laws will forbid Midway from exporting them. Roll Eyes

Seems like I got my last one from Cabela's, as the airport goons last September nearly ruined the one that I have used for years. I also have a number of Pelican cases that work perfectly as well.

I have a pelican 1300 and the MTM box. The pelican holds more and is tuff as hell but heavier. The MTM is light. One time in JNB they made me remove the Pelican/ammo from my luggage and sent it as another piece of luggage. I was glad I had the ammo in the Pelican. That has only happened once out of 8 trips over. If my luggage weight is critical I go with the MTM and less ammo, if not I go
with the Pelican and more ammo. I like to
leave some ammo with the PH, they appreciate whatever they can get.

Until I saw that Midway case I thought I was cheap. This is what I have used for too many trips now.

Bought one of each size of the MTM cases last week. Must say they seem to be very well made and I will pick up a couple more of each this week. I have several ideas on using these.

I will take my ammo to Moz next month in the larger one as my luggage will be checked straight through from Albuquerque to Beira, Moz. I won't have to worry about it having to "go alone" somewhere along the way. I would use my Pelican case if there was a chance it would have to travel outside my checked bag.

I used the same metal cash/receipt box with combo lock the last 3 weeks. Worked great.

Or have a friend pack toiletries in one or two of them for a trip to Europe where they can be mailed to you. Wink
