I am leaving for my first hunt in South Africa on May 1st. I dip Copenhagen Snuff and would like to know if there is a limit to the amount I can take with me? I will be there 9 days so 10 cans will get me thru. Can I take that much with me and if so is there any particular way it has to be packed, declared, or whatever? Thanks for any info.

I always bring a box of cigars with me to Africa.

The personal Customs limits for tobacco are:

•Cigarettes not exceeding 200 units and cigars not exceeding 20 units per person over the age of 18
•250g cigarette tobacco or pipe tobacco per person over the age of 18

250 grams is 8.8 ounces and a can of Copenhagen is 1.2 ounces. 7 cans would be 8.4 ounces so you will have to pay duty on the other three cans. I've never been checked coming through Customs into Africa.

I have been fine with a can in my pocket and 10 in my suitcase. It's never been an issue.
Take all you need, you won't find it there.
Have fun!

I have never been checked and always take 2 rolls with me, at least. Don't worry about it. Go and have fun

Yes, although I have been living in agony and pure misery since quitting a month ago, in the past I have always taken at least a log of Swedish snus with me wherever I go. No one has ever stopped me. I have been asked a few times what it is but that's it.

While my wife is very happy about this I think the health benefits might be offset by the significant increase in Scotch and cigar evenings I now find perfectly justified by events such as.. Tuesday, or sunny weather. Everything is worth celebrating now with a little nicotine!

Anyways, back to your question. Yes, pack more than you will need because running out feels like dying.

I took two cartons of Top cigarette rolling tobacco to Zambia last time. It was never even looked at or mentioned.

Last year I took $300 worth to my PH (about 8 rolls, I think) and the Zim folks gave me funny looks and then let me through.

Be forewarned you can't use it on Delta flights, thank God. I remember finding a spit cup in my seat flap once and thought I was going to puke. Probably not as bad as when I used to use it and spilled my spit cup all over a LTC when we hit an airpocket in a helicopter.

Man, I don't miss using that stuff. But hey, good luck on the hunt!
