Now that we have successfully scrapped the gun registry, how do we prove our ownership of firearms and purchased in Canada when we return to Canada? We don't have the equivalent of the 4457.

You need to get an export permit from the federal gov. Do this sooner than later as it can take some time to get them. Do a search for export controls on line. You will have to print off the form and fax it in. I did it last year when we went to Africa. Went through customs on our return and the officer said that he never saw anyone who actually went through the process of getting the export permit. If I remember I will put the link to the export site.

Getting back into Canada they normally only ask for your PAL, in fact they have never even checked my guns coming back in, but that is not always the case. I would get a temporary export permit, a lot of guys don't but it is required by law and if you don't have one it could be trouble. I have never been asked to show it but I always get it. The export permit normally takes about 2-3 weeks if it is filled out properly. Make sure you put your scope info and all ammunition on application or it will get sent back. The people issuing the export permits are first rate and very helpful.

Some countries in Africa, require proof of ownership of a rifle. The old registration cards work or if you don't have that a sales invoice with the model, caliber and serial number works. Australia requires a notarized copy of your firearms licence and passport for an import licence.

For my two trips to Africa, I got export permits for my rifles, scopes and ammo. It is important that, on your return to Canada, you get the Border Officer to sign on the export permit that you have returned the guns to Canada, then you have to send a copy to the Import/Export people.

I had a customs agent in RSA ask to look at my export permit once. Never had a Canadian customs guy yet ... about 15 trips or so .. probably next time. Cool

Most of the CSBA agents don't seem to know about the temporary export requirement but the ones that do get very officious about it. The law requires it when traveling outside of North America so I wouldn't consider not getting it. Be sure it is signed by a CBSA agent on your return too. One permit is required for your firearm and a second for your scope/ammo.
