Without hacking/unlocking, is it possible to use my phone, and if so what do I need to do in order to make use of the cell towers in Zimbabwe (specifically Harare and in the Valley/Dande)? It would be great to have the ability to make an occasional call, and send/receive texts - without having to rent an Iridium/sat-phone. Thanks!

Bill, I had my 5 in Victoria Falls, Sengwa Research, and Harare this past November. I turned off the data roaming and used the phone and text with no issues in Vic Falls and Harare. It had a weak signal at the Sengwa Research camp but was able to text at times. My provider is AT&T. Hope this helps.

I used my iphone 6 this past April in Dande. Didn't have signal at Pedza but could always get signal to text while driving out to hunt. I also have AT&T. "If you are not working to protect hunting, then you are working to destroy it". Fred Bear

I was able to use my iphone on the airstrips at both Dande East and Pedza. I didn't have much, if anything, in the actual camps. It wasn't cheap though!

Bill, I added a $60 international data plan for Johannesberg, as AT@T did not offer anything in Zimbabwe. It came with free texting and a per minute charge for calls. I was able to send receive text when away from Pedza but had no signal at all in camp.It also had good signal in Harare. I used my Iridium for calls. I don't think it's much different in Africa, but I did the same plan mentioned through AT&T. I also brought an iPhone 4 and got a local SIM card to contact those in Argentina. I'm giving the phone to someone here, as they are quite expensive. I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills. Marcus Cady DRSS

I suggest everyone gets WHATSAPP. Free messages wherever there is a network access.

I bought the AT&T international plan and my phone worked fine in RSA and Zim anywhere any signal could be had. I have an I Phone 5 I think. I used WhatsApp any where possible for messages. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. Lane Easter, DVM A born Texan has instilled in his system a mind-set of no retreat or no surrender. I have sim cards from MTC for every country that I travel in southern Africa. You can purchase minutes from any store virtually anywhere in Africa today. Guys even sell cards on the side of the road. Everyone has a cell phone now. A 200 minute card costs about $16 USD. Internatinal calls eat minutes quicker but still FAR cheaper than an international calling plan or sat phone. As Saeed and Lane said, Whatsapp is by far the best way to go for inexpensive texting and calling. Plus using Whatsapp uses less time than making a traditional cell call. And when you are in range of wifi/internet it uses no minutes. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Bill, We did about the same thing with the same results although I had no signal at Pedza I did not take the phone out while hunting so have no idea about coverage in DSA. The phone worked for texts and calls in Vic Falls and Harare. Buzz's phone worked fine in camp. I just used the Sat phone for the occasional Darin Nelson update call to keep her from entering withdraw. I have international service on my plan with Verizon. I have been able to use my phone in many places in Zim. I cannot stress enough the need to turn off data roaming. I turned mine on for about 30 seconds. I got a $1,700 bill.

Ok thank you gentlemen. Armed with this knowledge, as first plan of attack I will visit my local Verizon store and see if I can get a temporary international plan. Larry, the roaming charges are what concern me, noting that while my phone is not loaded w/apps I do have some such as an app for our VoIP phone system and others that phone-home. I'll pay close attention to this. I'll download WHATSAPP for when around WiFi...hoping that perhaps the Charlton Estate offers this to squatters.

Bill, On an iPhone just go to settings - Cellular - Cellular Data and turn it off never to turn it on until back in the States. I was concerned about having a surprise bill like Larry on return but had no issue and I texted a fair amount in Dubai, Jo-Berg, Zim, and Moz. Only made two phone calls. No surprises on my return. Larry, Just an FYI, the newer Verizon phones are unlocked. You can purchase a local SIM card for very little money, I paid $1 US for mine in Tanzania, and for a few more dollars you can add data, text, and calling to that SIM cards. I saved my old Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 just for traveling.

Lane: Which service did you activate or turn on. I was in a little chat session with ATT and they couldn't say which. I am using the iPhone 5S for a couple more months. Is it just International service or International roaming or which all pieces do you guys recommend to add to your service? I don't want to carry the sat phone around this time. I did add the WHATSAPP. Thanks.

Further to my post ^^^^^ My wife is spooked by the $2000 bill possibility. And of course none of us want that either. She says the she was talking with ATT and they said they don't have service or a plan there in SA, Zim and Namibia. But I know guys here have used it and posted to that effect. But I thought we would just turn on the International plan and pay for whatever minutes they offer. Then just activate the roaming when she wants to make a call. Then roaming back off afterward. Is that possible or am I off the field here? Thanks.

Take my advice with a grain of salt. I have an iPhone 5. I converted to an international plan with AT&T before leaving and suspended Joyce's service. I was told by the AT&T phone guy that if I turned "cellular data" off that I could text for free and calls would be something like $1.00 a minute. I texted a lot. I called about 6 minutes from Harare. The phone worked great in Harare and Vic Falls, not in Dande Safari Area. When I got home 7 1/2 weeks later I had an $80 extra charge for texts. I called them and told them what I was told about texts being free. They a reed and credited my account. No $2,000 surprise. Cheers Jim BTW, I also texted a ton in Dubai. ______________________ DRSS ______________________ Hunt Reports 2015 His & Her Leopards with Derek Littleton of Luwire Safaris - http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2971090112 2015 Trophy Bull Elephant with CMS http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/1651069012 DIY Brooks Range Sheep Hunt 2013 - http://forums.accuratereloadin...901038191#9901038191 Zambia June/July 2012 with Andrew Baldry - Royal Kafue http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/7971064771 Zambia Sept 2010- Muchinga Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/4211096141 Namibia Sept 2010 - ARUB Safaris http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/6781076141
