Form I got from Gracey has list of caliber and amount of each for ammo taken. We plan (as suggested) to divide up ammo in checked bags. Is that a potential problem if I've listed the total rounds I'm bringing but have a box of other ammo in my checked bag? or Should we list what we are actually carrying even if not carrying a rifle of that caliber? Not trying to overanalize the situation, just trying to prevent any problems. Will the ammo even be checked when we get there?

My experince in travling through SA, is that you are only permitted to carry ammunition for the the rifles you are travling with.

You are paying Gracey. I would hope they could answer your question. Confused

Not sure I understand the question...but...

If you and your hunting partner each have some of the others ammo in your bags, you EACH put the total amount for YOUR gun(s) on the form.

If your nonhunting wife has some of your ammo in her checked bag, you claim the total amount you are bringing into Namibia.

If you are bringing in some ammo for your PH, etc. that you don't have a gun to match...you are on your own. Big Grin

Regardless, they don't check your baggage to see if you are being honest. At least they never have in the four trips I have made.

The only thing they check is that the serial number on your gun matches the form you fill out. Then they fill out their form and give you a copy. You will need that form to exit the country, so don't let it get away from you. They will again check the serial numbers and ask you how much ammo you are leaving with. Have a number ready to tell them. Big Grin

I've been to Namibia twice. When turning in the permit and checking the SN on the rifle at the Police office, the ammo has never been checked. I have carried half the ammo in my checked bag and half in my wife's checked bag. On the permit I listed the total number of rounds I brought into the country. When you leave Namibia, you will go to a different Police office in the airport, turn in your temporary rifle permit, and be asked how many rounds you are taking out of the country.

Our experience exactly. Save yourself some time and fill out the form in advance so you can just hand it to them. They check serial numbers and away you go. They never checked our ammo coming or going.

We split our ammo incase a bag got lost. That way each bag had some of both calibres but we each claimed only what we had for our own guns.

. . . as did we. Ammunition was not checked in Namibia (baggage was checked all the way from U.S. through FRA to WDH.) I wouldn't advise trying to end run their rules on which and how much ammunition you can bring, but so long as your party's bags contain only what you said they did on your firearms form, you should be fine.

My experience as well...just tell them how many rounds you have left on your departure...........they have asked both times I have hunted Namibia.

With regard to bringing in ammo for a PH, I wouldn't advise it, but then again, I've never had the number of rounds on the permit physically checked against what's in my baggage......

You NEED to carry the permit with you when travelling on any public road..........due to police road blocks and potential searches.......though once again tourists with PH's tend to get waved through............

Thanks all. Confirmed my thoughts. We'll list what we are each actually bringing in regardless of whose bagage it's in.

Correct. List the total amount of ammunition that you have with you.

When you enter Namibia you collect your baggage first, then proceed to the Police Firearms Control. Since you'll have your suitcase(s)/bag(s) with you when the Firearms Control Procedures are accomplished; you still have the same amount of ammuntion even if it is stored in several suitcases/bags.

When I flew into Windhoek a month ago, I did my police paperwork before I got my luggage. In fact, my luggage wasn't out when I finished my paperwork. The guns were delivered to the police area before the regular luggage showed up on the carousel.

As I recall, form has a signature line, also as I recall, do not sign this line until the customs officer has checked your firearms serial #s and filled it out.

I seem to remember that the guns cases were put in check in room before the regular luggage got on the belt!!!!! How 'bout that common sense/hunter friendly dancing

No doubt!

I had an officer, after I had stood there waiting for a few minutes, ask me if I could see my case. When I said "no", he asked for a description, then went and found my case outside so I could get on through the process.

Definitely hunter/tourist friendly!

And remember, when that 80 rounds of ammo you brought in is depleted to 0 rounds when you leave (due to you having given the remainder to your PH), tell the nice police officer as you are turning in your paperwork before you fly out that you are either a really bad shot, or that you killed a LOT of baboons and jackal - I got a big laugh using that line Smiler
