safari-lawyerHotel at JNB
Anyone stayed at the hotel at the airport? It is reported to have been redone for the world cup, but I've not heard any first hand reports.
So, if you've been there in the past year, how was it?

HotRail1I stayed there last August. It was very convenient and I had no complaints. The room, the service and the food were all good. My PH met me in the lobby the next morning and we were on our way. I would stay there again.

Greg RIt's pretty nice and, obviously, quite convenient. I've stayed there several times, most recently in September.

safari-lawyerI guess there are two options there, the Intercontinental and the City Lodge. Experiences at either or both are appreciated.

kudu4uHave stayed at the Intercontinental twice and Afton House once. All good experiences. The Intercontinental has a shuttle and is about a minute or less ride.

OldHandgunHunterI've stayed at the Sun many times -- very comfortable; reasonably priced; as convenient as one can get; and best of all they have a truly fantastic buffet for both dinner and breakfast.
When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.

elk88101Been to Joberg many times never stayed at the airport hotel.
But the Afton House is a must once.
Just my 2 cents.

Idaho SharpshooterAfton House for me. It simply IS part of the African Experience. Annelise(sp?) and two of her daughters were at Reno. One can sit on the patio with a good cuban cigar and a bottle of Amarula and just soak in the African sun. They have an excellent library as well.

I agree, we stayed at the sun last September and was very pleased with the service, price, etc. Can't beat the buffet's.
I would definately choose them again.

shakariI prefer the Intercontinental by a country mile.
Great service in the hotel and all you have to do to find umpteen cuisines including an ocean basket is to walk across the road to the airport.
You've got no worries of shuttles etc to worry about.

From my experience, the Intercontinental is right across the street from the airport. I just walk across the street each time I stay there. It's guarded by policemen, so no worries there.
It's the nicest one I've stayed at in Jo-burg, but I've only stayed in 3 different places there. The bar in the lobby is usually full of hunters as well, which is nice. Their gemsbok filet's are excellent, too.

shakariYes, you can walk to the intercontinental in a minute or two but they do often also have electric golf carts buzzing around that'll pick you up FOC.
The Airport Holiday Inn isn't quite as nice as the Intercontinental but it is cheaper and the free shuttle usually takes less than 5 minutes.

larryshoresThe Intercontinental is far superior to the Holiday Inn in every aspect. The IC is closer. There is no waiting on transportation. It is much nicer and the food is better. The HI isn't bad. I will always stay at the IC if they have rooms.

Use Enough GunI've only stayed at the Sun. I thought that the Holiday Inn was converted into something else, no? Or was it vica versa?
23 February 2011, 00:11
shakariI'm not 110% but think you'll find that Southern Sun own most if not all Holiday Inns AND the Intercontinental chain.

Use Enough GunYes, I believe that we stayed at the Intercontinental last July. Nice rooms and a great evening buffet! We were booked there by a full-up Afton House, after we arrived a day late due to a plane delay in Las Vegas.
