I will be traveling from Washington Dulles to Harare through Dubai in August. I have always flown SAA in the past, but so many AR members have recommended flying Emirates, I thought I would try it. My layover on the way over is 1 hour 20 minutes. Is this enough time to do some duty free shopping and get to my next flight to Harare? Do I need to go through a transfer desk like I have had to do in Jo'burg when I flew SAA? Any help / advice is appreciated.

Subsailor; If you are traveling with firearms 1 1/2 hours is probably not enough. Not because of paperwork but because of luggage transfer. You'll have a long walk if you are traveling from the A380 arrival to the Harare departure (which involves a bus ride to aircraft). If you aren't traveling with firearms, luggage transfer is tight but possible, I think. You may have a little time for shopping but not much. You'll check your luggage through to Harare, but ask at check in for them to tag your luggage for "short connection". With 2 hours I had time for a glass of champagne in the Biz lounge and that was it. You'll love Emirates compared to SAA! Best regards, D. Nelson

I had an 11 hr layover. Got a room in the "in airport" hotel. So I had plenty of time to shop and didn't have to go back through Customs. There is pre-boarding security. But unless you're after designer items, souvenir shopping in the airport isn't like Jo'burg, lots of Gucci, Chanel. There is a good cigar store (not for me, but PHs). On return I had a 1 1/2 hr layover. They tagged my bags at check for "short connection". Guns and luggage made it. But on the way home I wasn't as worried as having them arrive. Had the bus ride to the A380 terminal. Best regards, D. Nelson

Are they still requiring that you check in iPads and laptops at the departure gates homeward bound in Dubai, Abu Dabi, and Doha? Last year that was a PIA and took an extra 30 minutes at the gate. Vote Trump- Putin’s best friend… To quote a former AND CURRENT Trumpiteer - DUMP TRUMP

Subsailor, I'm advising all my guys using Emirates to take the long layover. 1 hour 20 minutes is just too tight. Mark MARK H. Very true Mark! I refuse to take any international flight that does not allow at least a 2 hour layover.

I also just booked today on Emirates out of Seattle Via Dubai final destination Bolawayo. I have about a 6 hour layover in Dubai. Can I do anything while I am there?

Don't leave the airport. Because you do not have enough time, as you might get stuck in traffic.

What dates are you traveling? I’m doing Denver-Houston-Dubai-Harare on 8/11-12 return on 8/29-30. ____________________________________________ "Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." Terry Pratchett.

I am flying Emirates out of SFO on June 29th and have the overnight as well in the "in airport hotel" in Dubai. Then to Zim in the morning. I don't know anything about it yet. Do your guns come with you to the room or do they stay with the airline? Is access to the hotel easy? Is there access to the surrounding area from the hotel? Would be nice to step out and see the place while I'm there.

Your rifles stay with the airline. Depending on the time you have, you can go out to town. Not much close to the airport, so you will need to take a taxi, tram or bus. If you do leave teh airport, may I suggest you give yourself plenty of time to get back, as some times you can get stuck in traffic.

Has anyone here on AR have first hand experience, good or bad, with that short connection time, while traveling w/firearms ? Understood its not a preferred option on general principle but I have been led to believe Emirates is well run and there hasn’t been much noise about firearms not making that tight connection..... I have asked the same question before with no real answer. Based on those in Harare meeting this flight there does not seem to have been any issues but yet people are being advised not to have a short connection. Yet those advising have not said they actually had an issue. What gives? Understand its tight but its Emirates and they run this route every day. They know the guns are on the flight going to the next flight.

I don’t think anything gives. I think it’s real simple. Anything less than 2-3 hours is flat out Ill advised. Here, there, everywhere... when traveling with guns or any “special handling” luggage. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen..doesn’t mean it won’t happen. What your really asking (which thereis no answer)Is what are the odds? Are my odds 50/50 with 1:30 in between Are they 75/25 with 2 hours Are they 90/10 with 2:30? People want a simple answer to a question with no simple answers. One persons answer has no credibility either way. You need 100 answers to have 90% credibility Bottom line is...more time...more probability

No its real simple, has anyone actually had an issue? Yet to see a single person say yes. Who on this connection has had an issue? If there have been issues then give some facts. You can make a connection in 45 minutes or miss one after waiting 19 hours. If you travel regularly then you know what can go wrong and how to deal with it. If Emirates has a 99% success rate on getting guns transferred in 80 minutes thats good enough for me and better than Delta.

Point well taken. Looking hard at Zim late September and since full days are at premium for me, my choice is either a 1 hour 35 minute connection time or 13 hours 40 minutes. Don’t believe that’s enough time to put anything together in Dubai but it’s a long time to kill in the airport... Gentle inquiries with firearm travel pros seemed to indicate the short connection time isn’t an issue......but it would suck to be the exception. Did the SAA/ JFK-J’berg dance before and it was tolerable but wanted to try Emirates. Of note, no one yet has come forward to say they gambled and lost ( of course no one has admitted to winning either! ). Going to have to pursue this and the connecting flight w/ firearms process a bit more.

Going this route mid September, if it fails I'll make a plan. Would rather not have to wait a day in case something fouled up. But would rather spend the time in Harare with friends. Best suggestion I found is to make sure you put into your reservation that you have guns in baggage and check in Dubai that they make the plane. Emirates is the way to go into Harare. Longer travel time, but cost is very good and more comfortable. Yes connection time is a concern but no one that has flown this route has come forth to say they had a problem. Compare that to the cluster in JNB.

I just went through Dubai 2 weeks ago.I had a six hour layover.I decided to have Emirates trace my Luggage to see if it was in Dubai. They took my baggage tickets and Passport and checked in the computer, for some reason they had me wait on the side of the check in counter? They did not disclose the reason. They finally started boarding the plane. I was the last one left and the Gal at the desk came over with my Passport and said FINALLY!!! Then she let me board. I was getting VERY nervous about missing the Flight. I had a checked bag with ammo and a double gun case with two firearms. I had ALL paper work in order and everything was checked and authorized by Emirates when I boarded my Emirates flight in Seattle?

The airport police keep your rifles while on transit, not Emirates. In a way, this is very good, as the police know in advance about them, and make sure that are on your flight.
