Next week I am traveling to Greenland for muskox and reindeer. I am flying Scandinavian Airlines from Washington Dulles to Copenhagen overnighting at the airport hotel then Air Greenland to Kangerlussuaq the next day.

Question is this. My double rifle will be broken down in a small locked Americase. My ammo will be in a seperate small locked container. I wanted to put the locked gun case in the bottom of my wheeled duffel. Then clothes and locked ammo in the Duffel. SAS agent said that is acceptable. Hunt booking agent sees no problem. Travel agent strongly recomends not to. Opinions welcome and appreciated.

You got your answer already.

It all depends on who you get at check in.

One will pass it with no pro, another will not!

Don, I did have travel bag like yours and gave it away.

while storing your gun in the lower compartment and locking it, then in the top compartment placing your ammo and extra items works in the states. I was informed that it would not work internationally while flying.

Your travel agent is right. Always use a separate, dedicated, TSA-approved hard-sided rifle case. Putting a gun case inside checked luggage creates huge risks for baggage handlers and may violate airline policies. The extra cost for a proper case is worth avoiding potential delays or confiscation.

Hello All

I had mixed results. IAD to Copenhagen via SAS said no problem. Copenhagen to Greenland via Air Greenland required my ammo in a seperate bag. Results were mixed again on my return trip. Once again, both were in seperate locked containers inside a large locked wheeled duffel. Was it a hastle? Yes. Was it worth it to me? Yes. I prefer to hunt with my own (double) rifle not a loaner bolt gun that I am not familiar with.
