Does anyone know how treated clothing stands up to typical safari washing methods. Instructions indicate normal washing will not remove for numerous washings. However the methods I've seem employed in camp are a bit more robust, harsh ,brutal compared to a Maytag. Thanks for any advise. Thanks Larry

On both of my trips so far the permethrin held up except for the socks on the first trip. This year I really soaked the socks until they dripped. Tsetses left me alone. "Never, ever, book a hunt with Jeri Booth or Detail Company Adventures"

About five years ago , to deal with the big malaria problem in central Africa, scientists developed a way to chemically bond insecticides to cotton ! I't has become more and more common in the USA in restaurants , stores , offices etc. I tested it once and no change was found after 20 washes ! It will also contaminate other cotton clothes it touches ! I don't know it's name and what insecticides are involved. Another nightmare for those allergic to it !!

Someone needs to make a powdered Permethrin so you can take a booster with you. The washing does tend to diminish the effectiveness by the end of a long safari. I'm going to take a couple of cans of arisol in my checked baggage this year to deal with that. There are no problems with checking arisol cans are there? (I know it's spelled wrong, but I can't figure out how to spell it right).

Thank you for your replies. Sounds like the treatment should hold up pretty well for the length of my trip. Thanks! Larry

I took a 24 ounce spray bottle of permethrin with me to Zim in my checked bag. Just a spray type not aerosol, those are not allowed. I applied it every day to the clothing for my son and me. No problems at all with any bugs other than those damn mopane bees. Happy to help. Amazon.com sells a brand called Sawyer, I took 24 ounces and used about half of it over the 15 days. For years here and abroad I have used Coulston's Duranon Permanone on my hunting boots, shirts and pants. Never on my socks and your body will absorb chemicals through your skin. I realize it can via your shirt or pants but typically they do not sweat as bad as socks, nor do I grind either while walking miles each day. I do carry two cans of said product in my checked bags. Never had a problem doing so. I have watched Ticks climb up my pants only to rear up and fall off dead a few inches past my knees. It is deadly! I can't say the same for Repel's brand; Tick's get punch drunk but do not die. I believe Sawyer has now bought Coulston's; both are on the Sawyer web site. I wouldn't hunt without it. Do not spray on your skin! We use horse spray in the boat when fishing in South Dakota and sometimes at home. When you get a bunch of fish slime and worm dirt all over the inside of the boat the flies and gnats get almost unbearable at times. Spray it down with stable spray and they are gone for a while. We use Bronco, which is not an aerosol.

Paul, I just got a spray bottle, and it says one should not use it more than once every 2 weeks?? I have never used this before, but, the area we hunt has lots of ticks, and the bloody things like to go where no mosquito dares to go! I will try it later this month in the Selous, and see what difference it makes.

Here's a nasty development http://www.dailymail.co.uk/hea...evere-reactions.html Permethrin is the answer here also .Remember thatpermmethrin shouldn't be applied to the skin. only to clothing !

Thanks, Duckear, I'll check. I'd like a refresher mid-way through, but can't stand the weight or volume of two liquid bottles, or even one.
