$500 for the PH if you had a good quality experience. Not great trophies, those are up to God. Hard work deserves reward. A good range finder is a thing of joy forever. I left a Bushnell, they use the little 9-volt batteries that are available there. When I gave my PH the range finder, I was scared for a minute he was going to kiss me. I settled for a bearhug.
Cell phones there run on buying minutes. $20-30 for them is a great thing. Cash is good too, especially in Zimbabwe.
They get a lot of the meat, so see it gets distributed fairly by your PH.

I wouldnt encourage Clients to ENSURE that a PH distributes meat fairly as in many cases there are reasons where Camp staff etc may not even get a look in at meat shot, for completely legitimate reasons. In addition, a lot of PHs will leave the distribution of meat to their senior camp staff and let them get on with it. I know one PH who has a book for tips that is run by a senior camp staff member. He gets the Client to write down exactly what he is giving and then lets the staff sort it out. As it is written in the book, no one can accuse anyone else of dodgy stuff. Try not to get too involved in it as it can create some real rifts amongst staff , who always resort to..."the client said this, or the client said that" ...AFTER the client has left

Carmel candy with the white filling and duct tape were very popular gifts when we were there last year. Our PH had a special request for Hidden valley ranch dressing. I had to ask him 3 times if he actually meant the salad dressing.

The things that we take for granted here in the US.

I genuinely don't understand why so many Americans have this thing about thinking we all need duct/gaffer tape in Africa?

We don't use any more of it than anyone else and I promise you guys, it really is readily available over here.

Even in my little town of White River that you can drive through in less than 5 minutes, there's at least half a dozen places I can buy it by the mile. It's even readily available in countries such as Tanzania, Uganda & Botswana etc.

Well that is easy to answer. I posed the same question last year on another forum. Everyone kept stating "Take duct tape" You are the same Shakari from NE I think? Since I absolutely revere your opinion and you didn't say not to, I figured it was a "must take item" Is that a right of passage thing? Like in the military when you send someone out looking for a 1D10T I feel so used ! Maybe you should post on the Shakari Connection (Which by the way is fantastic) to NOT take duct tape!

Next time I come to South Africa, we will have to meet for a cold one.

I'd never heard of the ID10T..... we used to send people to the store a long weight.... but the same result!

I sent the new guy In a sawmill out for a saw dust pump It was a large mill and i sent him to the planer. the planer man sent him to the dry sorter. the dry sorter operator sent him to the guard shack. on the way to the guard shack the plant manager stopped him and ask him where he was going after the butt chewing he came back to work . things where a little tense at the family dinner that week end he was my cousin

Many years ago, on a working (not hunting) trip to east Africa, I took a lot of chewing gum to pass out to curious children. I will never forget watching them chewing with big grins and mouths open as hundreds of flies swarmed around them, landed, and crawled into their mouths only to be chewed up with the sweet sticky mess they continued to enjoy.

Another time, while trying to make friends with the locals, I offered a coil of twisted antenna wire to a crowd of Masai ladies. They looked at me with blank stares till I motioned to an earring and a bracelet on one of them and then indicated they could use the shiny silver plated copper wire for such things. They instantly exploded into a mob clawing and fighting over the wire. I had to fight it away from them and, with the interpretive help of my friend Livingston Lacombe, snipped off and doled out six foot lengths. Once order was fully restored, I turned the rationing task over to one they seemed to respect and things continued peacefully.

I wonder how many snares the wire was made in to??
