I will be flying through Dubai in 3 weeks and I have a short connection time to Joberg- 1’ 5”. I was wondering if they still had a security checkpoint to transit when catching a connecting flight. Last time I transited there you had to go through passport control and X-ray security to get to your next flight and it bogged things down. Thanks in advance.

That helps.

But 1 hour 15 minutes is cutting short.

And as far as I know transit passengers do not go through passport control.

. . . but transiting passengers do go through a security/x-ray check.

Well, that sucks. There will be 4 of us traveling business class. Hopefully since it is a “legal” connection on the same airline, it will expedite the process. Thanks for the info.

In my experience the transiting passenger check only takes 5=10 minutes. There are usually plenty of open lanes. Run your carry-on bags through the x-ray and passengers go through a metal detector. That said, an hour and fifteen minute connection time is close in Dubai just because the airport is so big.

Please tell us about your experience.

Personally I have always avoided connections less than two hours, in any airport.

Normally I like at least 2 hours but an outbound MIA-Dubai- JNB only offered this short connection. Returning we have a 2 1/2 hour connection. My wife was recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and I’ve booked a wheelchair assistance in Dubai outbound since she can’t walk very fast. Hopefully this will help at the security checkpoint. I figure if Emirates sold the flight and connection that they figure we can make it. I guess we will see.

In all my flights on Emirates, they are very rarely late in arriving.

And usually a few minutes.

A few days ago I arrived at Geneva in Switzerland.

Very small airport compared to Dubai.

I was second off the plane, second through immigration, by the time I got to the luggage place, they started coming.

My bag was 4th.

I was in the car in less than 15 minutes!!

Got an Emirates driver who likes to put his foot down.

Drive to our home up in the mountains usually takes between 2 and 3 hours, depending on traffic.

We made it in less than two hours!

Compare this to one time landing at Stockholm airport.

Even smaller than Geneva!

Took me almost two hours to get to the luggage belt!

Jerry, wise decision to get your wife a wheelchair service. I did that with mine in May as there was no way she’d be able to walk as far as we had to go. It was great! We transited the airport much quicker than I was used to. It’ll be very helpful for her.

At Dubai airport they do offer MARHABA service.

Where they meet you at the gate and take you through wherever you need be very quickly with a golf cart.

Saeed, I took your advice and booked personalized transfer services for my wife and I. The $202 it cost compared to the cost of 2 BC tickets was minuscule and hopefully well worth it. We won’t need it on the return as we have a 2 1/2 transfer window.

Still, on the return trip, book her the wheelchair service. It’ll make a very positive difference for her. After seeing how much it helped my wife, she will have that on all future trips that go through large airports.

That’s my plan. The only problem is the Emirates website doesn’t seem to offer the wheeelchair service on individual connections through Dubai. If you click on wheelchair assistance it looks like you can only book it for the entire flight, not individual legs/ connections, which we don’t need.

Don’t know where your flight originates, but we’ve had very good service calling local Emirates office (DFW: +18007773999) to resolve issues/requests. Their hours, at least at this office are limited, but worth a try. There are other offices in the US which are listed on their website, nothing like speaking with a live person.

We are departing from MIA. I’ll try to contact them tomorrow. As an aside, when I checked Emirates prices out of DFW, it was $3800 more for 2 BC tickets. I can fly to MIA in 1’20” for half of what it costs to get to Dallas in 2’30. No contest. Strange, though, in the past it was cheaper to depart DFW. Airfares have no rhyme or reason.

Don’t even try to understand airline pricing.

A friend flying from Australia to Dubai to Dar.

BC Australia to Dubai, then FC Dubai Dar.

Travel agent found that FC all the way is CHEAPER???

Can you explain that??

I transited through Dubai 10 days ago. The baggage security check is quick.
When my wife had terminal cancer a couple of years ago we used the wheelchair service. They will make absolutely sure you don't miss your connection.
While your wife may feel well enough to not need the wheelchair for the whole trip and as a proud woman she may feel it is humiliating and not necessary I do recommend booking it for the whole journey. That way you are ensured of your Dubai connection. You will be surprised at the VIP treatment you get for the whole journey.

A couple of weeks ago traveling out of Dubai, being 75, I was asked at the desk if I wished to have a wheelchair.

The lady said they do that as a courtesy.

She laughed when I said I could probably beat her if we had a running race around the airport!
