Does anyone know of a state or city in the USA where a firearm as part of checked baggage could be confiscated?

Just curious.

BH63,

As long as you declare the firearm, it is in an airline approved case and the particular airline has no restriction I believe you are good anywhere.

If you are flying through JFK and your flight is delayed overnight or you decide to stay overnight, don't bring a pistol.

Technically you have 24 hours to transit NY with an unloaded firearm locked in a hard case. If you have a pistol and claim it in NYC then check in the next day, you are probably going to be in trouble.

I would never trust NYC ! They in fact work with there own laws not those of NY State. Check first with some NY lawyers !

Actually that is what motivated me to ask the question. I had booked a flight to Bangor, ME for a bear hunt, and it connects through JFK. Since it only had a very short connect time (about 1 hour) in both directions, I was wondering if having a pistol in my gun case (along with a 45-70) might be an issue if the luggage didn't make it on the outgoing flight(s).

I finally decided to cancel that booking and get something with a longer connect time (and perhaps avoid NYC).

Thanks.
