Heathrow Transit Theft

Just found out that last week as my uncle (he is 66 years old) was transiting at Heathrow this ipad was stolen.

Now the scary part.

His Ipad was stolen at the security point and most likely by people who work there.

He had just arrived from the US and was transiting to a flight for Asia and was required to undergo security.

He was tired and haggard from a transatlantic flight.

At security he was asked to remove all the content from his carry and asked to go thru security scan multiple times. These multiple security searches seemed to be confuse and delay the person. Then he was told all is fine and to head to his connecting flight.

Between the multiple security checks and opening of his carry on he was not fully focused on the contents of his carry on and in that time frame some stole his ipad.

He went to lounge and wanted to log on to check his email and there was no ipad. He went back to security raised a little hell and was told to go to "lost and found".

Given the time frame for the connecting flight he did not have time to do the paper work at lost and found or file a police complaint.

From a few other people I have heard of similar situations at Heathrow transit. I normally never transit at Heathrow as I go into the city for meetings.

I have always worried about something similar happening at Jo Burg when I transit for Zim. Given that I am carrying cash for tips ect I always keep a very close eye on my carry on as I am separated from my cash/carry on only at this point (security checks) in my travels.

Just never expected something like this to happen at Heathrow.

I am going to tell my Uncle he should contact the police - this area is video taped. If security is stealing stuff I am much more worried about very dangerous people getting thru as some one if more focused on swiping someone's ipad.

I was told several years ago by a world traveler to avoid Heathrow at all cost, especially if traveling with a firearm.
I’m sure there are those who have had no problems going through Heathrow, but I’m going to heed a wise man’s advice.

Bwana cecil AKA my stalker at DSC,

I'm sorry but your world traveler friend is full of poop. If you do your part as you have to with any airline you'll have no problems in Heathrow. Security on firearms is tight but that virtually assures you will receive your guns and baggage.

I always fly through Heathrow on BA if possible when going to Africa and recommend my client do the same. I can't recall any of them having any problems in Heathrow.

Me the stalker?
I thought you were the stalker!
Good thing I didn't owe you money, every where I went, you were already there or showed up shortly after I did.

same here, Mark. multiple transits thorough Heathrow- never a problem... going back through there in Oct. i especially LIKE having the usual 10 hour layover after arriving from the west coast to London. i get a good nights sleep on the plane, arrive Heathrow about 8AM, hop the express train into downtown Paddington Station, walk around and sightsee( walking distance of Buckingham Palace through Hyde Park), hop the train back, then get on the evening flight to Joburg. lessens the jet lag when i arrive in Joburg.

If you don't mind walking down the jetway to board to find a couple of Bobbies with automatic weapons and body armor standing over your gun case and asking if these were your guns, I am sure it is a lovely place to transit.

Jeff,

They are very thorough there when it comes to gun security. In another city your guns might have just disappeared as nobody would care about identifying their owner.

Duckear,

If you read the thread you'll see it only applies to Comair/Kulula. BA will be carrying guns as usual. SAA can easily pick up the domestic RSA flights for hunters and the connecting flights to Zim etc.

that sounds like a positive thing. you know for damn sure your gun is going forward from Heathrow. who cares about armed police in body armor? walk around an airport in Italy/France and look at all paramilitary with assault rifles inside and outside the terminal. more reassuring than the TSA morbidly obese rent-a-cops you see in US airports.... i doubt that they could even see their holster for the fat roll, much less draw their weapon and use it.

The only time I flew through Heathrow, I had packed my ammo in my rifle case (which is a no-no in the UK) Two Bobbies in armor met me at the boarding gate and very politely escorted me to a holding area and asked that I remove my ammo and place it in my checked in baggage. They were both very professional and helpful. I had no problems with them at all. I'd fly through again except for the 12-13 hour layover. That was the killer for me.

Will be transiting through there in early June connecting to Air Canada from SAA. Glad to hear they take the security of my (and Dave's) firearms seriously.
