Also check the dimensions of your case (length + depth + width). Delta has a size limit and anything over so many inches is an extra charge.
Check their website for details. they may have changes the size since last fall when I went, so I don't want to post any numbers that may not be applicable now.

Tracker - The dimensions don't apply to rifle cases, golf club cases, etc. just the weight.
This is pretty standard procedure for most all the airlines to exempt "sport cases" from the dimension structure.

Matt, the 50 lbs will take you thru to Jo'berg, but intra-Africa restrictions are usually 20 Kilos, which is about 44 lbs. I checked my bags from USA thru to Bulawayo, and didn't have an issue.

I know of one situation, I was there, where a fella was told his aluminium case was "too big".

This was at Dallas Ft. Worth International.

He had to go to Bass Pro and buy a different rifle case.

Funny thing is, between my wife and I we had 2 full size Tuffpaks, and a take down Tuffpak.

His case did not look to big to me????
It was the typical aluminium 2 gun case, not the Safari 3 gun case...

Possibly a very good reason to avoid going through Texas on the way to Africa. Amazing that someone in Texas would say anything was too BIG. Isn't big what Texas is all about?

I didn't realize that the gun cases were exempt from their size limit, the one I originally was going to take was too big (4 gun case and it was over their listed dimenstions), so I bought a smaller two gun case for our trip last fall. Oh, well better safe than sorry I guess.

Is a 1750 Pelican within size standards? Certainly not over 35 pounds with a single rifle. Thanks

I've used the Pelican 1750 gun case for two trips to Africa and a lot more to Alaska and the lower 48 states and have never had a problem with size or weight- it usually has one rifle plus binos, bipod, knife, etc in it - I can't remember what it weighed but it was not very close to the max

Matt, be prepared just in case (no pun intended). United charged myself and a client $150 each before they accepted our gun cases. Mine was 6 lbs over (56 lbs) and his was 2 lbs over (52 lbs). We had no clue but had been advised we might be charged $50. That charge was only on United Air: Nashville to Dulles.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."
