If you are traveling to Zim through South Africa on SAA -- with no lay over -- and you check your bags through to Harare in the US, do you need the South African firearms permit? Thanks. Mike

I checked by bags and guns from Nashville, TN to Bulawayo back in Feb. No problems except my checked bag and rifle case was two days in arriving. It was due to being taken off the plane due to bad weather at Dulles. I managed to jump on a flight, but my bags didn't. I can't blame United. They did everything possible and got them to me later. Mike Good luck on your Safari. Just in case I would have all the necessary SA paperwork with me. I have traveled thorugh SA [spending a couple of days there each time] on my way to Zim 3 times. I have always had all the required paperwork and have NEVER had any Drama with SAPS. In fact they were always very friendly, and I even had a handgun all 3 times. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I flew Wash DC (Dulles) to Harare through Joberg this past May. Just checked my guns and bags through to Harare on SAA. Didn't have to go through any of the RSA bull with the guns. If you're spending any amount of time in the Joberg airport, check out the premier lounge, if you're flying coach it will cost you approx. $18.00 (free for business class) but it's well worth every penny. BTW - checking firearms in at Harare was a piece of cake compared to RSA. Fill out the forms ahead of time and bring a total of 3 copies with you. The customs guy was very appreciative of the fact that I had it done ahead of time and I was out of there in less than 15 minutes. Tom Z NRA Life Member

Those traveling to Zim should make sure when they enter the country that all the dates are correct --- when I entered through Harare in May -- the individual whom processed my entry failed to stamp the entry date on my passport -- when I tried to leave 15 days later the very last person to check my passport as I was leaving caught it -- he looked and looked through the passport w/o saying a whole lot -- thence proceeded to ask how long I had been in the country – problem seemed to be I was in Tanzania last fall and he was trying to connect to that as that was the most recent date in Africa -- after a bit more I realized he was apparently wanting some $ to allow my departure -- I just played dumb (actually comes quite naturally) -- he finally gave up and stamped me on through. Just make sure all the dates are correct along the way -- I do not think the lack of date on my entry was intentional -- it was dark and late at night when we arrived -- next time I will have a flashlight in my carry on to make sure all is okydoky. OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

Just returned from Zim trip travelling via Joberg. If you change airlines in Joberg it is vital that you visit the transfer desk on arrival even if your bags and firearm have been checked through to Zim. The airlines do not do their own transfering of weapons between each other, but use a security company.Your bags will transfer automatically, but you will need to activate the transfer of your firearm yourself by making the request at the transfer desk. If your rifle does not make the flight with you their rules say that they cannot forward it on alone. This information was given to me at Joberg airport on 14th July.My rifle made it through with me, but as you may have guessed my bags caught up three days later. I made this same trip in early June and did not have to speak to anyone in Jo'burg about transferring the guns unlike R.Jolly's experience. I am curious about the premier lounge though. I had a several hour layover and just walked around the shops and bookstore. What is in the lounge? _______________________________

The Premier Lounge is located on the mezzanine level above the departures terminal shops and waiting areas. There is a flat day fee that I do not remember - but not much. But when I went in for only a 3 hour stay they settled for all the small change[Rands] I had in my pocket [as I recall about 2/3 of the regular price] It is much like any other airline lounge area, but maybe a little tired and maybe a little scruffy too. They have free food, sandwiches and snacks, drinks etc decent comfortable seats and computers with internet connections [maybe an extra fee for that but I don't recall exactly] It's not really plush but it was decent and quiet and not very crowded and better than sitting and waiting with too many people in too few seats in the general waiting areas. I yu have a longer wait it would really be worthwhile I think. Les
