Not sure if anyone else has run into this yet, but since mid July it appears that some United agents will try to charge for your checked baggage, even when traveling on a SAA, international, ticket. [They allowed 1 bag free then charged two clients $50 each for their 2nd bag. When it was pointed out that it was an SAA ticket, and the bags were supposed to fly free, they responded: "Then talk to SAA about it!"] We did get the $$$ back from Customer Service when we pointed at their own web site - they denied the error until then! Their policy has changed going forward but it does not apply to tickets purchased prior to June 1,2011. If you run into this it might be helpful to print and carry along these two pages from their web site. pre June 1 post June 1 Les

Hi Les - yes United changed their policy and started charging clients even if the only United flight was domestic and connecting to South African. Took this up with South African Airways and today they just put out this information : August 15, 2011 South African Airways / United Airlines Baggage Announcement Dear Valued Travel Partner: South African Airways would like to advise you that on Friday, August 12th, our code share partner, United Airlines confirmed to us a change in their free baggage allowance policy as it applies to Economy Class passengers traveling between the United States and South Africa and involving any of their flights. Effective immediately, for any tickets purchased after July 14, 2011, passengers checking in with United Airlines for a connecting flight (code share or interline) to South African Airways, will be charged $70 USD for their second piece of luggage. This applies only to passengers in Economy Class, traveling to or from South Africa, Malawi or Zambia. All other Southern African destinations remain unchanged with the free allowance of two pieces. Our free checked baggage allowance with our code share partner, JetBlue remains unchanged. The free baggage allowance of two pieces of luggage will apply on JetBlue code share flights. We sincerely regret any confusion or inconvenience that this recent change in United Airlines’ baggage free allowance policy may cause. At this time there are no other changes to South African Airways baggage allowance policy, and we will do our very best to keep you apprised as soon as possible of any further changes that may transpire. Thank you, as always, for your continued support in selling South African Airways. South African Airways North America Sales

Steve, Interestingly, UA will charge $70 for the 2nd bag on the domestic connection to SAA, which for me is TPA to IAD. But if I was just flying on United to IAD from TPA they would only charge me $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag. Nice way for them to inflate their bottom line! I wonder are they charging $70 again at the return connection at IAD? Les

Hi Les My point exactly. I've sent this to a travel lawyer to see what he says on this.

UA wouldn't give me the 80,000 airmiles, said it was SAA responsibilty. Delta didn't charge us extra last August; Nashville to Atlanta. I wonder if that will change?
