Is the TSA precheck worth the $100 it costs? I've got to make a couple of trips this year carrying a firearm, including a trip to South Africa, and I am thinking about precheck. Thanks

I suppose it depends on how often you travel, and whether you're making connecting flights returning from overseas and which airports you're traveling through. I get precheck as part of Global Entry, and find it well worth it. I'll make 9 trips this year - 4 international and 5 domestic.

In recent overseas trips, I've entered the US through DFW, O'Hare, and JFK. In these airports, after clearing customs you have to go through security along with anyone else traveling domestically. In that case, precheck can help you make your connection.

But when I used to fly United and enter the US via Houston, Dulles, or Newark... at least one of these airports had everyone making connecting flights going through security with no separate precheck line. (But since American started flying to our town in 2016, I haven't flown in via these airports.)

Of course, there's the general convenience of shorter lines and less hassle when you're traveling domestically, too.

Keep in mind pre-check is good for five years so the 100$ is a pretty small fee. I’m going to get it just because on the several trips I make domestically I see the pre-check folks skate through tSa

As above, depends how much you travel and the cost is minimal. Well worth it for me as I travel a bit too much domestically.

Thanks everyone. I'll be travelling through Atlanta on the trip to SA so I think I'll go ahead and get it.

Guys,

I just now applied for TSA PRE CHECK and had my meeting the the next day. EASY PEASY and I can't beleive I have not done this way before now.

$78.00 for five years and since the office is in the STAPLES store I got $10.00 off some office supplies.

Did the exact same thing yesterday. 5 minutes to apply online and 5 minutes at my local Staples. About as easy as it gets. They told me about 5 days to get the Known Traveler Number.

+1

We would have never made some connections on the way back from Antarctica without it.

Cheers

My wife, kids and I have been using Global Entry with TSA precheck since it first came out. I wouldn't leave home without it.

I have TSA pre-check as a benefit of having a TWIC card. It comes in handy.
