I just purchased the $169 Sony's. Great sound and very good noise canceling. Dr. Dre's have the best sound but are 300-$400. ski+3

I don't know where they rate compared to others, but I have a set of Sony MDR NC40 noise cancelling headphones, and they work just fine. They plug into my laptop, tablet, phone, and the jack on the airplane. They use a single AAA battery. George

do they work on women???

No unfortunately. Or children. My experience is they work great for engine noise, etc. but are not really effective on voices. But they are much better than nothing. I have Bose and Sony. I like the Bose, and I and my wife will not travel to Africa without them.

I use Sony's... too cheap for Bose! I would not travel without them. I have the Bose, but the Sony's are probably a better value. I traded in credit card points for mine, so the $ figure wasn't as important to me. I've had 2 sets. 1st was "on the ear" and was rechargeable. My present set is "around the ear" which I feel is much more comfortable, especially on longer flights. Instead of being rechargeable, this set uses AAA batteries which last a surprisingly long time.

They have a model like that, but none of us can afford that model!

Thank you all for your input. My son in law loaned me his Bose over the ears. Amazing! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. Just got back from my trip. The Bose over the ear muffs were awesome. Push the switch and "Poof", silence. Listenrd to my iPod in comfort. Yep, I'll be giving these back to my son in law and buying two more. One for me and one for the wife! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. I have the Bose and like them just fine. My only complaint is that when the battery does die, they are completely done. You can't just listen to music without the noise canceling function when the battery is dead.

Buff - Would carrying a spare battery be a solution to the problem? Couldn't resist. What battery and how many do the Bose units take? Thanks. Larry Sellers SCI Life Member

Depends... The old unit "on ear" was rechargeable. The new "around ear" version uses AAA.

For this you better go to the silencers forum. Hans

Gee Larry, wish I'da thought of that! Seriously, they take a single AAA, and it's not a huge deal to carry a spare. I keep one in the case I keep the 'phones in, but I hate carrying that case because it takes up a ton of room. There has been more than one occasion where I threw the 'phones in my briefcase and then the battery died somewhere over Nebraska and I didn't have my spare. You can always get another one when you land, but you have no 'phones for the rest of that flight, at least. Since most headphones don't require a battery to at least play music, I think it's a drawback to the Bose that the battery actually runs the whole show and not just the noise canceling feature.

My Bose unit takes only one battery, but I carry fresh spares with the headset in the mesh pocket in the carrying case.

I like the fold up Sennheiser headsets. Try to get one that runs on batteries vs. a charger that needs to be plugged into a wall (like my Bose) because the flight to Africa is looong These are $100 or so I prefer model PXC-250 II ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Bose hands down. I fly over 100,000 miles a year for business and these are the only ones I'll ever own. One charge and they'll get you all the way to Africa. Graybird "Make no mistake, it's not revenge he's after ... it's the reckoning."
