Where does one place the permit, in the gun case, on the outside of the case, or on your person, or all of the above. Any help would be appreciated>

I believe the requirement is that the transit permit be placed on the outside of gun cases or luggage containing ammo.

I taped a ziplock bag containing the permit on the outside of the TuffPack and on the ammo case. Seems to have worked fine.

I did put a complete set of docs on the inside of the ammo case and the TuffPack along with a spare lock ... in case someone felt compelled to cut the lock. (My TuffPack is modified to have a hardened stainless steel tongue for a standard lock.)

A copy attached to your gun case is not required.
Have a copy inside your case and with you.

I have a question about the phone number on that report. I submitted my applications a bit over a week ago and called Dutch customs to confirm receipt at 011-30-50-523-2600. The "31" in the sequence may be in error, or may be a number I'm not familiar with. FWIW...

You just really need it on your person, although it never hurts to put one in the case. Usually the gun case remains with the airline and is put in storage, along with your ammo, which needs to be in a separate container and bag. You would then declare that you are traveling with guns to the customs agent as you clear customs and they would check the permit, etc. and then clear you. On the way back through (just a layover and not a stayover), I told customs that I was traveling with firearms and they just said fine and didn't even check the permits. I believe most folks have had problems where they were staying over in Amsterdam for a day or two.
