Just observed a better way to carry a 4457 form.

Was departing out of Zim and was asked to produce my rifle "license" --- stupid me I could not figure what they wanted nor could several other hunters --- thence the light came on -- they wanted the 4457. Seems there is a new rule (apparently at the request of SA authorities ) that anyone traveling though SA must have license for that weapon. Indiviaul at the counter requesting the "licnse" said this was new as of January one.

Noted that one of the other hunters had actully laminated his form which in my opinion made it vastly easier to find and handle --- mine seems to always wander into the corner of my documents and hide --- henceforth mine will be laminated --

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

Thanks for the heads up sir. I'll try to remember, and inform my hunting companion that the 4457 is our "license" and we'll keep readily available.

I laminated mine and also carried 3-4 notirized as valid copies in case some idiot said they need a copy.

I traveled with an accordian file of travel regs etc. My wife thought I was even more anal than usual but she now tells people how many times I had to produce a copy of a rule or such and I always had what I needed.

whats a 4457 form? Must be a US thing? Is this the same as proof of registration that we have in Canada? If so why would they want to see that as it pertains to your own country does it not?

I will say the obvious. A 4457 is not a license, it is simply proof of ownership to the US Customs folks. I have been laminating mine for several years now and putting it inside the gun case with the weapon. When i open the case for them to inspect, it is right there. Also, if I am seperated from it and US customs opens the case they will have its owner, etc. I also make a color copy (can't tell it from the original) and keep that in my luggage, just in case. My name and address and phone number are on the outside of the gun case, so if my firearms are delayed at entry to US, they can call me and I can give them the combination to the gun case lock, thereby allowing them to inspect it and allow the airlines to forward on to the final destination, in the event I went home without them. Thankfully, I have not had to test this method yet.

I called Homeland Security today and was told they only do pistols.
Where can I get a new one?

You can get them at the Custom's offices - most easily located at the airport since most have offices there.

What I wished they would do is provide them with any new gun purchase (along with the receipt of course). Would be nice if we could get them from FFL dealers...

I have a half dozen of the things for a watch and cameras and four rifles. I have this great old leather passport wallet I bought in the 70's with several pockets and they ride in their own spot next to my shot record.

Great ideas.

Butch- I will start doing what you do, the 4457 inside the case- great idea if rifles are lost or delayed in New Jersey or Chicago and you are already home.

Laminating does make it look more official and lasts longer.

I agree with the accordian file idea. I learned to also travel with printed airline regulations for the carriers I am on (usually Delta) in case you get someone checking you in who shrieks "GUNS! AAAaaagghhhh1" or something similar.

I found the easiest thing for me was to tape an envelope to the inside of my rifle case and keep a copy of the document there. I have had the same documents in the rifle case for several years now, no looking and always there when I am ready to go.

Yep, been laminating mine for years! Keeps them protected from tearing, spills, etc. Good idea.
