I've been looking at some European hunts lately and some have piqued my interest. When I've looked at flights from Philadelphia, PA to several different European destinations all connect through Frankfurt.

Does anyone know what the procedure is for transiting thru Frankfurt with firearms?

I've done this a couple of times - but things change frequently - so beware!

If you have the same airline through to a final destination (Luftwaffe?) then you should be OK - should be checked through. I've previously had to collect guns then check them in again onto a different airline - for which there is a charge (about €80 per weapon) - it also takes time. I would allow a minimum of 2 1/2 hours for a transit.

Personally I always make bookings like this direct with the airlines - an agent is not going to be there to help you with a German customs officer or stay on top of the booking status - just had Air France change my booking from "weapon in baggage - confirmed" to "not confirmed" for no reason. Fixed - but requires attention to detail.

Not an issue if you can check thru to your final destination from the start in the US. You will have a major issues if you try and collect and recheck as the airline must inform the BUndesgrenzschutz (Border Police) and they require German paperwork and licenses.

Wow that’s too bad. Things must have changed. Around 2012 the airport police stored our guns for us while we went into town for lunch

Thanks for the great info. I'm guessing one would be in deep trouble if for some reason your connecting flight from Frankfurt to your final destination was cancelled for some reason and you had to take a different flight.
