Joyce and I have had some people who have enjoyed our pictures and stories of time in Africa ask why we don't just take pictures.

Aside from the obvious answer that we are hunters I used to try and explain that the idea of being locked in a Safari car in a Park viewing animals that ignored me while having a dozen other cars show up at any really cool sighting because they were radioed to join in does not appeal to me.

We would rather be boots on the ground and part of that African landscape. Hunting delivers that.

While spending time with Derek & Paula on our Leopard hunt in Mozambique we were fortunate enough to meet a friend of Derek's - Mike Scott.

Under the name Khangela Safaris Mike does walking safaris as well as guided canoe and kayak trips into the African bush.

He is licensed and can carry a rifle into places like Mana Pools in Zim.

He's the chap in this you tube video that has the Hippo come up under his kayak while doing the Lugenda River and ending in the camp where we met. Be sure to watch the clip at 7:45 into it.

Anyway, I now think I have a recommendation for our more adventuresome friends on how to put boots on the ground in Africa, tasting it's full flavor, while not hunting and having a well seasoned guide.

Jim,

I have done it both ways, and enjoyed both hunting and photo safaris.

A photo safari is very relaxing.

A hunting safari is very intensive.

I certainly prefer a hunting safari to a photo safari.

But, taking the whole family to the bush on a photo safari is great too.

I don't tink I would be very good in a crowd type tour. Joyce is nicer than me. Big Grin
