Anyone here ever heard of Ilse De Villiers? I just bought 4 of her black and white paintings. She does great work.

Stephen,

Yes, I know Ilse De Villiers. She is a friend of my South African PH and I now consider her a friend also. She lives in Tzaneen, SA, and I have visited her at her home there. You would be hard pressed to find a nicer lady in all of South Africa. She does very fine work, and her love of wildlife is very evident in every one of her paintings. She only sells original paintings (no prints) and I believe she paints only or mostly with acrylics. She has been to the U.S. and has exhibited at the SEWE (Southeastern Wildlife Exposition) Art Festival in Charleston S.C. although I don't know if she'll be there this year. Two years ago my PH brought over about 8 or 10 of her paintings to see if he could sell any of them for her, and he had no trouble selling every one of them. Also, a good friend of mine here in Salt Lake bought several of her paintings while he was over there in SA in 2007. I have not seen any of her "black and white" paintings yet - perhaps you could post a photo of one?

She does great work. I have bought several of her paintings. Who's your friend in SA? Nicol Martin or Ken Ball with Shiawela? I know that she visits there often, but didn't know she was going to other outfitters. I saw a number of her latest paintings when I was at Shiawela in December and they were fantasitc...And very reasonably priced. They are much cheaper in RSA before they have to be crated and sent to America. I would suggest buying there as opposed to here if you're looking for a deal.

Her work is exceptional to say the least, and she's one fine looking lady. I hope to own one of her Leopard paintings someday soon.

I met her in Hudsonville at SCI two years ago,and she also came over to Ken Ball's ranch for lunch one day with us.

She does very nice work.

I have not heard if she is coming this year or not, but I'll see Jo Ann Ball tonight at our SCI function in Hudsonville and ask her.

Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Terry,
If you see Joanne soon, tell her I said hello. I've been seeing Ken everyday, and we're taking him out to dinner tomorrow night. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. By the way, Ilse is not going to be at any of the shows this year. There are some paintings in the states at some of the local galleries. But if you email her directly, she'll tell you exactly what and where her paintings are. I also have one of her small black and white leopard paintings with the accented eyes that is for sale through her. If someone would like to see pics, please pm me and I'll be glad to email you a pic.

Stephen,

The friend that Ilse and I have in common is my PH, Johan Spies (Johan Spies Safaris). He lives East of Tzaneen SA, near Gravelotte. He does not own a hunting concession, but he's an outstanding PH. I met Ilse on my first hunting trip there. Johan knew I was a beginning painter, so on the last day of my safari, after having shot the animals I was after, and upon my request, he arranged for me to visit her at her home. She was a very wonderful and gracious host. It was a great experience for me and one of the highlights of my trip. I last saw her in October 2009 when I went there for a wedding.

beautiful work, shame she doesn't offer prints in a working man's price range.

Rich,
You're correct in that there's no prints; all her work is original. However, some of the black and whites are quite reasonable, and quite stunning. In RSA they're $250 per painting. I dont know how much they would be here, but probably not much more. If you get a chance, take a look at some of those. They're brilliant.
