Awesome Custom 338-300 L.N. by Steve Billeb, ACGG Founder / Member

When I saw the listing I couldn't resist adding it to my collection. This is my 3rd Custom Rifle built by a member of the ACGG.

My first one was a 416 Rigby Mauser by Nate Bishop, (see this link) https://forums.accuratereloadi...1019521/m/5921078472
http://buckstix.com/buckpics/416forun1.jpg

the second one was an 11.2x72 by James Tucker, (see this link) https://forums.accuratereloadi...4711043/m/7491004872
http://www.buckstix.com/buckpics/imman-0.jpg

and now this 338-300 Win L.N. by Stephan Billeb, http://www.buckstix.com/buckpi...LLEB-338-300-000.jpg
http://www.buckstix.com/buckpi...LLEB-338-300-000.jpg

This rifle is built on a highly customized Enfield magnum length action with many modified features as described in the listing. Its also an early wildcat 338-300 L.N. caliber. This caliber is slightly different than a standard 338 Win Mag in that the L.N. stands for "Long Neck". The longer case neck provides more bullet support and more uniform "bullet-pull" for improved accuracy.

The stock design with the wonderful checkering pattern really displays Mr. Billeb's artistic talents. I can't wait to get it in hand.

Super nice blank choice. One of the great builders.
A bit puzzling is the apparent end cap on the stock only visible in the third picture from the top. Lighting?

Hello. I don't understand your comment. The 11.2 was a Total Custom Build / Restoration by James Tucker. I spoke with Mr Tucker and he recalled the project and even sent me a copy of the original "build sheet" from December 2002. He finished the build in December 2005. He received the Innman Mauser Barrelled Action from the Customer and did the complete restoration and made the stock from a Exibition Grade blank. He said only the final rust blue was farmed out. He said the "58" stamp means it was the 58th stock he created when he went into business on his own.

Are we reading the same thing? The rifle is described as "Inman/Muller Custom of Suhl..Country of origin is "Germany"

Mayhaps Tucker is getting short changed?

Hello,
That title "Imman/Muller Custom German Model 98 Sporting Rifle with Scope" is the way it was listed on the Proxibid listing for the Auction. The Auction House had no clue that it was a complete restoration by James Tucker. Only after I purchased the rifle, and pulled the action, did I discover the markings in the stock. Searching the name TUCKER, brought me to the ACGG web site where I learned that he was a member. On that site I found his phone number and called him and received all the History about this build. Thank goodness the Auction House experts were too too incompetent to discover what I did, otherwise I would not have been able to afford the rifle. And, much to my surprise I found that Mr. Tucker is a Master builder of much Fame. I got very lucky and bought the rifle for less that 1/4 of what it cost the customer back in 2003, and about 1/6 of what it would cost me to have Mr. Tucker build it today.

The auction house also listed this rifle as curio and relic but was built in 2003. You did luck out, it is indeed a fine looking rifle.

Hello,

The gun (Innman 11.2x72) was "built" in the 1890's so it was actually an "antique" being pre-1898. The rifle was RESTORED and RE-STOCKED by Mr. Tucker in 2002 - 2005, so it would have been exempt from C&R and FFL. But, you have to go by what the incompetent Auction House says because they set the terms.

The James Tucker was the one that appeared to show a fore end cap only on the stock on the third picture down. The rest had no cap. Sorry to confuse.

Hello custombolt,

That's just a dark shadow - there is no cap - the forend tip has a slight Schnabel end.

From what I seen in pricing custom rifles.

Losing money is fairly typical.

It is built on a 1898 action there for is it not

Considered a modern firearm Unless one could prove it is a 98 action made in 97.

You may be correct. BATF defines an antique as 1898 or earlier.

I added a vintage Weatherby scope. As soon as I get some cartridges loaded I'll have a range report. Here's a pic of the cartridge compared to a standard 338 win mag.

Here's my first field test - a very remarkable rifle. Since it was new and unfired, the first shot was a flyer. Wink
