I have an original Oberndorf Kurz action to re-barrel & make into a lightweight, European style, rifle/carbine. The action has been made into a sporter before, so there are no sacreligious modifications to an original collectible here.

I would like to offer my client a choice of cartridges, but I can only come up with one that is compatible with the Kurz-length magazine and is deferential a 95 year old action, the .250-3000 Savage. I have zero interest in a .22-250 or .300 Savage. So, am I missing something or is there an alternative to the .250-3000, not that, as Seinfeld would say, there's anything wrong with that. I have thought about the 6.5x47mm Lapua but its operating pressure of 63K psi seems a bit much for the action. Comments please.

I really like the 250-3000. I have on a small ring, small thread Mauser. It is my Axis deer rifle. Accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

The .260 Remington is a perfect cartridge for the Kurz Mauser.
I had one build in the 1990´s.

I think the 250-3000 is a fine choice. I built two of them. One for each of my sons. Great cartridge.

Perhaps a 6.5x57 mauser might work ... not sure on the length of the action verses cartridge ...
Classic , original ...

I had Duane Wiebe build a 6.5 Creeedmoor on my Oberndorf Kurz action. I used it last night to kill a big 8pt. It is a sweet little rifle and I wouldn’t change a thing. The rifle holds 4 Creedmoor in the magazine. And with the popularity of the 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition is easily obtained. I can send you pictures if interested. I have had several custom rifles built and I think this one is my hands down favorite.

7mm08 comes to mind but the working pressures are up in that high 50 /low 60K area again that you seem to want to stay away from.
The 6.5 Creedmore would seem perfect but for the pressures again. 308 the same. But they appear to have worked out fine for others here on the K action.
They are not weaker than a standard model 98,,just shorter.

The orig 6.5P was a 54mm length and .470 head dia. on a long necked case.
Can be made from most any x57 brass with the right dies but not something most people like to mess with. Chambering is another consideration.

Same for the 256 Gibbs Magnum. That I do make from 7 and 8x57 brass. I size in a shortened 6.5 Swede die and TTL. Comfortable round to shoot, and accurate in a Geo. Gibbs 1903 M/S sporter.
Different if nothing else.

I don't know what the intended use is, but the 25, 30 , 32 and 35 Remington AutoLoading cartridges make nice bolt rifle rounds. The case heads are smaller of course, the 35 being the odd one. But that can be overcome.
Case lengths are about the same as the 308.
Lower working pressure for sure, positive deer getter rounds and a bit different. I have seen a few Mannlicher and MAuser sporters in 25Remington .

Nice rifle,,and a nice 'problem' to have choosing a round for a sporter built on it!

These are the comparative dimensions of the 6.5X54 Mauser (top) and the 6.5 Creedmoor (bottom). I am currently in the process of converting a Kurz Mauser from .358 Winchester, which someone injudiciously undertook, back to the original Mauser caliber, perfectly matched to the action and magazine, which is 69 mm in length.

I have done this; make it into a historic caliber, and more recently, a very popular one;.
6.5x49, based on the 250 Savage case (popular in Europe then), and slightly improved.
And the benefit is that you can use current 6.5 Creedmoor brass in it.
Get the best of both eras. I will send you a picture of one.

The action historically has been a 250-3000. I would just stick with that..I don't believe there is a more balanced round to be had Ive owned many 250s shot many more, and never in my long life have I seen one that wouldn't shoot pin holes.

I have always thought that the original Kurz cartridge the 8x51 would be a very interesting and versatile cartridge.

There were three original Kurz calibers: .250/3000 Savage, 6.5X54 Mauser and 8X51 Mauser. I have two and am working on the third.
