Blackburn 1, 3.410 long, .882 wide in front, 1.005 wide in the back

This is older original metal, anyone have an idea what caliber it would be suitable for? Win Mags

If I recall correctly the Blackburn #1 was for a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 30-06 length. standard depth. I think the Mauser numbers started with 9, and anything with an X after the number was an extra deep box. If you have a mauser action and you want to shoot win mags you need a #17

Ok, it came off a ZG 47 , which I think is standard Mauser spacing between 7 13/16 and 7 7/8, I stacked 5 375 h&h loaded to 3.4 with cast bullets, they fit nicely, by the time you put the spring and follower, maybe 4 down?

Are you sure its a Blackburn #1?

Maybe Swift kept the same numbers as Ted used when he was making them. You could check with Swift to see if they did, and then you would know for sure what the #1 was for, but again, I am pretty sure all of the lower numbers were for Pre 64 Winchesters.

No.1 is for a 30.06 length Pre-64 M70. No. 9 is for a 30.06 length Mauser.

Why don't you just try some ammo in the box to see how it stacks up

This metal has 7 13/16 inch spacing between screws, both of my pre 64s measure about 7 1/2incnes, I had some metal stamped 5 that was the same spacing, 7 13/16 approximately and it fit the -06 cases perfectly

From time to time you can find any bottom metal that's been modified, I have several on hand.

If you do the math, 1" wide at the back is for a belted mag ctg. This is based on the ctgs stacking in equilateral triangles. 3.4 is too short for the H&H ctgs. I would guess this box is for a 300 Win Mag or similar. I think it's a bit narrow in front for a 458 Mag, even though it may work for that ctg.
