Rem's 3 rings are still A Good Idea because they ensure that most of any escaping gas will have to turn a couple of right-angle corners and thus slow down greatly before it gets to the shooter's eyes. Cone breeches like the pre-64 M70, Springfield 1903 and 1917 Enfield/Rem 30 are much more likely to cause damage to both the rifle and the shooter's eyes when a case fails.
