I'm not much of a G&H fan, but this one's about got me to change my religion!

It would cost you three to four times that to duplicate it -- and it still wouldn't be an original G&H

The biggest problem, for me, is that rifle is a true collectors piece, and I would have to shoot and hunt with it! Just lovely! Lovely, lovely!

That's an exceptionally striking early G & H, I once owned a Springfield 1922 G & H from that era and later a M/70 .35 Whelen. American craftsmanship at its very finest.

That IS a very nice early G&H!
I especially like their Mausers and this particular one is built up on a genuine square bridge Oberndorf sporter action.
You should buy it!

Someone didn't do their homework..this is WAY under rmarket price. Guns like this should be sold thru professional's. I think there's the ide of saving commission.

Jumping over a dollar to get to a dime!

No, someone else should buy it, so that I don't go and do something stupid!

Their wood is always so dark. Action is nice, but I don't see much special about the rifle as a whole. $20,000 to duplicate it? I think I'd rather have 4 $5000 guns.

It's an unengraved 30-06 with the basic Griffin&Howe features and no G&H side mount. Similar G&H rifles in similar condition have sold at recent auctions in the $3500-$4000 price range plus the 15% buyer's premium.

No side mount is a good thing, IMHO! That's what turns me off of most G&H rifles. That square bridge action, alone, is worth a mint. I really like D'Arcy Echols mato "Simplicity Rules!" This rifle embodies that, and like others have already pointed out, it'a a terrific example of an early G&H and of early 20th century American gunmaking. Not for everyone, for sure, but the word "classic" can be no more aptly applied.

It's an unfortunate reality of life but an unengraved G&H that isn't scoped and is in 30/06 does not command a price that we would feel is justified. The old adage "the value is what someone's willing to pay for it" applies and a rifle like this still hasn't "returned" form the 2008 drop. I can only surmise that those of us loving this style of vintage rifle aren't applying our discretionary funds like we used to. Maybe it's being reserved for even more special rifles but vicvanb is correct and it can be seen by reviewing past sales of similar rifles at the auction houses and online. To me, maybe we shouldn't view this as anything but a great buying opportunity. I hope that's the case and not a shift in the marketplace...

John Vest has the pattern for the "chin strap" cheekpiece. The grip on that G&H is REALLY close, but he can most likely modify

Walnut Grove Gun Stocks (http://www.walnutgrovegunstocks.com/) lists a couple of G&H patterns, one for iron sights and one for scope.

The fact that it is now listed as "on hold" means someone has both good taste and an optimistic vision

Those old rifles with only irons and iron for metal don't fair well for me where there is rain, rain.

Today the Stainless Steel guns have filled the front row in the rack for many.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

Do that with your optics.

This rifle just shouts class and character.
I understand those wanting stainless and plastic rifles for rainy weather. What I don't understand is how many of these rifles are proudly called "custom" when they are nothing but machine made metal parts with a plastic stock screwed on. There is no gunsmithing skill. Utility rifles and guns, yes. Custom work, no. Being able to program a computer lathe is not gunsmithing skill. IMO, of course.
Again, this rifle here is absulutely stunning. Most gun shops don't do this level of work for two reasons--they can't and the buying public won't pay for it. The level of firearms quality has declined over the decades. It is not just now, but rifles made 120 years ago have more attention to detail and quality than those 60 years ago. Look what happened to Winchester in 1964. The public accepts low class work (such as wood to metal fit) so that is what the shops turn out. Don't get me wrong, there are quality 'smiths out there, but they are few in number.

I do not have the collection of G&H's and Rigby's that some on this forum have, but my experience with older rifles show that TODAYS custom rifles are some of the best pieces of work ever made.

I do own a few (for their day) very high end German guns and have handled many older English and American custom rifles.

I would put many custom rifles built by members here up against them any day for having better fit and finish, better shooting, and over all better quality.

One of my good friends is a WELL known custom rifle builder in TX and I would whole heartedly disagree that his rifles do not qualify as "custom". Does he have to do all the machining that I do? No, absolutely not. My rifles do not compete in matches at 2 MILES either.
