Hi All . I am intrested in gettting a single shot custom rilfe made in 300 H&H mag. I would like to know your thoughts on what action to use? Would a ruger no1 make a nice custom or what about using an encore and customizing the stock?looking to build something nice but not something I have to sell the house for, what are you ideas please?

A Ruger #1 is a fine choice. One of the old or new break barrel single shot rifles or shotguns can be used and with work can be a thing of beauty. I know guys who use Martini's but I do not know if there is one strong enough or long enough.

Forget the Encore and get yourself a Ruger. For the price you pay the Ruger will make a fine rifle. As you're near Melbourne talk to Bob de Vries. Here's a link to a post I made about work he has done for me:

Ruger, definitely!

The standard H&H is a good cartridge but with moderate-to-heavy use will wear the throat at a rate about twice that of most other 30-cal magnums due to the shoulder angle; it directs the hot gases directly onto the throat. For hunting, for most folks, this isn't a problem since the rifle will not be fired that much. For an accuracy nut or a target shooter, however, the 300 Win Mag or 308 Norma Mag would probably be a little better.

Ruger, definitely!
Regards, Joe

The answer depends on just what you can afford or are willing to spend; my FIRST choice would be a Hagn action and Ralf Martini, Duane Weibe or Al Lind to build it. But, while worth it, many cannot afford such jewels....most of us in today's world!

A Ruger would be both appropriate from a traditional and aesthetic point of view and can be built into an awesome rifle. The superb old "Super .30" IS factory chambered in it and would be a sound buy, IMHO.

Me? I am on my fourth and last P-64-70 in .300 H&H and am just having a Rimrock stock I scored put on it to match my also near-mint P-64-.375H&H. I love these in .300 H&H and they WILL shoot 200 NPs into "bugholes".

All in all, get the Hagn if you can, it's a jewel.

Clay at Luxus located a Ruger #1 in .300 H&H for me, he's stocking it in English Walnut.

Price was more than reasonable.

I talked to Ralf Martini at the Custom Builders show last January and handled his single shot rifles.

They were exquisite. Was thinking of a 300 Win Mag with octogon barrel His site has good pics and description of rifles and options.

One cannot have to many guns Big Grin in fact when you die and go up to see st. peter the first question he asks will be how many guns did you own. The only correct answer is not near enough. if you say most anything else its straight down for you
