This is a custom rifle built on a 1909 Argentine Mauser by David Christman. It is chambered in the retro-cool 284 Winchester in a 26" barrel to take advantage of the newer 160gr VLD bullets. I'm going to add NECG Masterpiece sights and a straight bolt handle.

Cool and even cooler when you have her purtied up!

David Christman is very fine custom gunsmith and stock maker. And a nice guy too. I've seen some Ruger No. 1's he has stocked that is guild quality.

Nice one! The long barrel seems well proportioned to the fore end of the stock. Which scope is going on this one?

Beautiful rifle.
After my morning coffee I'm going to share my nonsolicited opinions. Big Grin I "feel" that the 26" ruins the lines. In my opinion the 26" is too long. I think 24" would look better. To be fair there is not many I like a 26" on from appearance.

I fully understand wanting the most of the 160s but with a chamber that allowed you to use the full box you would give up 40-50fps? Would you or anything you shoot know the difference? You are building a long range hunting rifle. Leave the sights in the box.

coffee All that said I would be happy to take it off your hands and leave it exactly as it is. Wink

As usual just my $.02

for me, rifles just seem unfinished without irons.

Scopes are much more robust these days, but...

and there is always a "but" somewhere lurking in the background.

Gorgeous rifle Biebs, fine barrel length,

Rich

First determine if you need 26 " to burn the powder. If not, bobbing to 24" may not be a bad move. It would look OK IMO with the stock.

Yes, this is the 2nd rifle I've had of his. The first was a dead-ringer for the 7 Mauser that Todd Ramirez made for Craig Boddington, with great wood, open sights, quarter rib, and gold lettering.

The 7 Mauser is long gone, but you might find a photo or two online with Boddington using his.

Beautiful rifle, great workmanship - but I have to ask why the 284 win and not it's ballistic twin the 280 rem? Just asking from a availability of ammo point of view.

That's an exquisite stock and metal work.

Consider leaving irons off. I never use them and we have had them come on factory rifles for a lifetime.

Add a scope instead.

Besides that stock and workmanship are so good I would use rougher guns in bad conditions.

The bolt handle looks very good. What do you mean by a "straight bolt handle"?

Consider adding a three position safety that controls the firing pin like the Dakota.

The 284 is the "Short Mag" version of the 280 Remington, and has been popular for mountain rifles for some time. Something different :-)

Very nice rifle Biebs.

Can I ask, if you do decide to straighten the bolt handle will the existing bolt notch in the stock still suit a straighter handle or will that too have to be altered ?

Just wondering.

Paul, the bolt goes straight down for a bit before curving back, so the inlet in the stock will still work. How are my future Water Buff doing down there? :-)

Biebs, your buff are doing just fine but still a little small.
I measured them all the other day and, although they are consistently growing, they are still not in that demanding "Trophy-hunter" class !

Biebs try 54.0 gr of R17 behind a 140 gr Barnes Tipped triple-shock x bullet. My 284 shoots that load into a sub 1/2" group @ 3076 fps (five shot average) 24 " Lothar Walther bbl, M98 R Famage action.
