I have a 338 RUM Win 70 it is one of the newer CRF actions. I ordered a winchester hunter mcwoody with a red pad inletted for a no.4 barrel. Ready to order my barrel but cannot decide what I want. I am flush with everything from 224 to 338. 375 H&H maybe?

I remember someone saying something about the extractors on these actions. Anything to that?

Perfect for a 404 Jeffery.....375's are a dime a dozen.

I'll second the 404 Jeffery, the RUM case makes for an easy rebarrel.

I hate brakes even though they are sometimes needed. I am not recoil shy, but how is the 404? Say compared to a equal weight 338 rum running 250s 3000 fps. I do not find that punishing at all so I expect it is worse, but how much?

No actual experience shooting a 404, but from all accounts the 404 has a very mild recoil not much greater than the 375. Often heard it recommend for those who want a 40 caliber but are a bit recoil shy.

I load my 404 at a nominal 2400 fps with 380/400 grain bullets, not max. but a serious load for DG. The historical loading is approximately 2125 fps and produces milder recoil.

The 404 offers a lot of flexibility 2100 fps to 2500+ fps with 400 grain bullets. You can also find .423 bullets in 450 grain, 430 grain, 380 grain, 340 grain, and other weights may be available.

Any advice on twist? I am still torn between the 375 H&H but think I might give the 404 a chance. How about brass is it a lot harder to find? Any special free bore considerations in the mod 70 before I order a reamer?

Another question. Iron sights or low magnification scope or both? Any type or brand of sights preferred? Scope magnification range and brand? What mounts are preferred for a rifle of this type. I am a longrange and benchrest type guy this big bore type stuff is a new area for me, please be patient.

If it's a decent .338 then sell it as it is.

It has it's most value now.

Then buy a gun chambered for a cartridge that you want.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

WHY? If I do that I do not get to play with all of those tools I spent so much money on? Nor get the satisfaction of killing animals with guns I built and bullets I loaded.

NECG makes nice sights. Also I used a replica 458 african rear made by Jim Wisner. Have your gunsmith add a barrel band sling attachment and crossbolt the stock. A heavy #4 or 5 (about 4lbs) contour barrel should put the weight right at 9.5+lbs

If you use the search function on AR you can find a good bit of detail on how folks here have set-up 404s, including reloading information, etc.

Twist 1:14 works well.

Hornady and Norma make brass, should be readily available. Midway, Grafs, Cabelas, etc usually have brass....

Talley is a good QD scope mounting set-up. I would have iron sights installed as well.

IMO, set the rifle up like a classic British express rifle. NECG sights, banded front sight and barrel band sling swivel, plus whatever rear sight you fancy. Put a low magnification scope (1-5x20 for example) in some quick release mounts (preferably not those ugly Weaver style ones). Finish the rifle off with a wood stock done in the old British styling and some nice bluing and you are ready to rock. That's how I'd set it up at least.

Thanks for the 404 info and the links.

I am going for kinda a psudo classic. I am going with a mcmillan faux wood stock but want the rifle to look classic big game hunterish. I will probably spray it with black cerracote instead of blueing it.
I remember someone building a barrel band front site might take a try at it.
