Gents:
I just traded into a German bolt action rifle. Caliber is .270 Winchester.

The maker's name is stamped on the stock in small letters just behind the pistol grip cap: A. REICH. The name of the city is DARMSTADT.

This is very high quality rifle built on a Mauser action with a B. Nickle 2-6x scope on claw mounts. 24 inch barrel with a two leaf rear sight for 100 and 200 yards. The stock looks like the old Winslow rifles that were common in the early 1970s--i.e. like Weatherby styling run amok. The carving is very well done, three ivory diamond inlays in the stock, with recoil pad and cheek piece, sling swivels, and the bolt, safety, and cartridge follower nicely jeweled.

I picked up the rifle on trade a week ago and would like to find out about the maker and any other information. It is exceptionally accurate. If I can get any info, I will post it on my website for sale with some photos as my area of interest is double rifles. I had to make this trade due to other firearms involved in the transaction that I want to part with as well as one I wanted.

Any assistance would be appreciated and if any of you folks want to see photos, email me and I will send them (I'm not too good at posting photos on AR).

Thanks, all and cheers.
Cal

PS. Just learned how to post photos!!!!

Was this not posted a couple of days ago???
I know that I replied in the thread with 2 links to Reich rifles, and the fact that his city was Darmstadt.

Conifer and Biebs:
I posted this a couple of weeks ago on the drilling page and someone suggested I post on the custom page to get more replies.
No, I have not shot too many 4-bores (but did take 8 shots today). Interestingly, though, Elvis came by after my shots with a 2150-grain Paradox bullet. Nothing unusual about that.
Give a ring when you are in Alaska.
Cheers,
Cal

Cal:
When I first saw your inquiry, I did a search for the gunmaker, and got several hits. Some of his products are high-dollar. Also, there's a German Gun Collectors Society http://www.germanguns.com/upload/forum.php
where you might encounter a more authoritative source of info.
I love older German guns, am a pathological accumulator, but not terribly knowledgeable.

My emails and photos to you come back as not being able to be delivered. If you can email me at pappas@mtaonline.net I will email the photos to you. I'd like to learn more about the rifle and its value before putting it up for sale. It's unique and very well made, but alas, only one barrel. I'll be here until Sunday pm and then leave for a week or more in northern AK for a caribou hunt. I've contacted the German group and jumped through the hoops but no reply.
Cheers,
Cal

I pressed enough buttons and the photos of the rifle are above in my original post. Can anyone tell me of this rifle? I'd like to get some info before putting it up for sale.
Cheers and thanks.

Cal, you aren't telling us enough about it. The action "looks" kinda FN or Husky so what's on the receiver ring ?
What are the proof marks (close up photos) of EVERY one.
The bottom metal looks military, but can't tell with no BOTTOM picture.
The fact that it's a 270 would INDICATE it was made for an American stationed over there after WW II.
Probably a "guild gun" that crosses a Weatherby stock style with the horrible German carving popular back then.
It would take a very "special" buyer. Nickle was a good (but not sealed) scope in period claw mounts. Depending on what the action really is, it could be worth up to 2 grand for the right buyer, who could get by its Reichsmarshall Goering styling. Or there is enough extra wood there that a good stockmaker could remodel it into a "classic modern" stock with a real ebony vertical fore end tip and no ghastly white line spacers.Inlays could be replaced with oval Ebony ones with the owner's initials on them.

Thanks for the info. You certainly know more about these rifles that I ever will. I posted two photos on my initial post but the photos didn't come up--just the link to the photos. Anyway, there is the bottom floor plate and left side photo and a close up of the proof marks. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Cal

Would agree with this (besides, he knows much more than I).

As someone else mentioned, you have to find the right buyer for the rifle. The action is nice, but the stock is a turn off for many as is the US caliber (if I were buying a European styled rifle it would have to be a metric - 6.5x57, 7x57, 9.3x62, etc.)

Since the stock is what is marked, that may be the only work that person did on it. Any markings on the barrel or scope mounts? Does not appear to be that old (the 70's may be correct) as someone went to the trouble of claw mounts but the front receiver ring was already drilled for mounts.

Very nice rifle, don't think that the value is that great on it.

Just my opinion, the value is equal to the cost!
