The 404 is one half of the project. The other being 375. They are both very well put together and the stocks are well...Wiebe! Nuff said.
Photos aren't very well done. Maybe the files are too big and degraded the quality. /Shrug

thanks for looking - Roger

Geez, this kind of work just amazes me! I can’t imagine what it takes to do such artwork. True craftsmen!

Well cut!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

I'm just curious. Is that engraving done on soft steel that is first annealed and later reheat treated, or made on hard steel?

I think that most of the metal sans barrel and action are mild steel. Barrel isn't very hard, but action requires some graver angle mods to strengthen the point and leading edge. Even then lots of resharpening.

These two actions are by Mayfair...Roger tels me even the guard screws were super hard.

The barrels are Lothar Walther... they seem to be about "norrmal" hardness compareable to any brand of barrel I;ve used

i seem to recall that barrels range from 25-30C and actions from 28-40c - the barrels aren't SOFT, but they aren't hard - a typical knife edge is 50-70 c

I think that you are right about the hardness ranges.
Chromoly actions are within those ranges for sure. Casehardened or carberized actions can be way harder.
My carbide gravers come in at 91.5c. They are hard enough but take a beating and require frequent sharpening due to chipping.
