Has anybody seen a Griffin & Howe P17 Enfield? Had some discussion with a collector who believes P17 actions were used for their magnum builts like 280 Dubiel etc? A picture of one would be greatly appreciated. Ron

If it were based on a H&H belted magnum case, the P14 would be a much better choice as the boltface is already the correct size and feeding would be easier as the magazine and rails were designed to feed a .540 rim, the H&H having a .532 rim.

IMHO G&H used Magnum Mauser actions as they were available ready to go whereas and P14/17 requires a lot of gunsmithing to make a decent looking action from it.

But a lot of strange stuff was done back in the day. I have seen Standard WW I GEW 98s actioned high grade custom rifles converted to 416 Rigby sitting in the rack at H&H in NYC. I owned a Sedgley Springfield in 300 H&H. You can imagine how much metal was hacked out to do that and how little backing there was behind the bottom locking lug on the bolt when closed. Then there was lengthing the magazine and follower and so on.
Things are a lot simpler now. I read a few years ago SAKO makes 5 different bolt action sizes/lengths!

There is not such thing as a "P 17" Enfield.

The correct name is U S Model 1917.

Only the Brits ised a P #.

I have only seen a few originals and they all had original safeties. I don't have any photos but do have one of a modern 416 Rigby version that Lon Paul built using a G&H stock style.

458, that is an absolutely beautiful rifle.

Here's an example of a vintage Griffin & Howe (mid 30's) on that action. This one started as a Remington 30-S.

I own a G&H .375 Weatherby on a Remington M30. I am away from home and will try to post photos in a couple days.

There were an awful lot of nice sporters built on Enfield actions when they were available cheaply and I was always especially attracted to the early ones made by G&H and H&H.

The more modern makers like Burgess, Echols and Paul, who also re-work the actions, change some of the unique features of the Enfield but also make pretty nice looking rifles as well.

458Win: There is sure nothing wrong with the original safety on the P14/M17's, but: the safety on the Lon Paul rifle sure makes a much cleaner stock line from the front receiver ring all the way back to the safety and the curved transition down to the grip. Very neat job.
