You need to look around this forum a bit.... Oh...BTW....I've never heard of either of these gun makers... There's a few folks that post here that build custom rifles and among the finest in the country.....get to know them and see if maybe one of them will build what you want. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Never heard of the 1st guy, but Rifles inc i have heard a fair bit...seem to remember it all being good. A 7lb 338 RUM? have you shot one in this config.? I have a Mark Bansner sheep hunter in 300 Win Mag, field ready its 6lbs 3 oz. and it jars me pretty good, I dont know how excited I'd be to shoot a 7lb RUM Rod -------------------------------- "A hunter should not choose the cal, cartridge, and bullet that will kill an animal when everything is right; rather, he should choose ones that will kill the most efficiently when everything goes wrong" Bob Hagel

If you are asking about Kirby Allen, he does nice work and has a very good reputation in the long range hunting community. Kirby participates on one of the long range hunting forums, and quite a few members have rifles made by him. It might be worth it to seek it out.

I have never had a rifle built by Kirby Allen but he is completing the fifth XP-100 for me. Top-notch gunsmith by all regards and has a considerable following among the long range, precision rifle crowd. He also does excellent work with long range handguns. That's why I chose Kirby to build all of my custom XP's. Best of Luck, Mark Hampton

I've had 5 or 6 rifles by Lex Webernick of Rifles Inc, and all were precise shooters. I've had 2 Strata lightweights, but I'm more into the standard weight rifles, which Lex calls his "Classics". I presently have a Rifles Inc Safari built on a pre-64 Supergrade, and chambered in Elmer Keith's 460 Guns & Ammo, which is a 404 Jeffery blown out and necked up to 458. Ballistics are about like a 450 Dakota or 450 Rigby...500gr at 2,450 or so. The rifle has accounted for 6 Ele and probably a dozen Cape Buff. Quite authoritative!!!

Have to correct you on this one. I have the 1971 Feb Guns and Ammo write-up by Jacques P. Lott (re-printed in the 500th issue Nov 2001) and he atributes the cartridge design to Tom Siatos. He is very enthusiastic about the cartridge, and for very good reason. On the 7lb 338 Ultramag, that would be a fearsome rifle. I put a few rpounds through a 338 Lapua the other day with a 300gn SMK at 2980 from a 17lb rifle and I dont think I would want it much less. My 404 weighs 9 1/2 lb and is fine for the 400gn at 2335fps. Von Gruff.

Have Lex build your rifle and you will not have any regrets!

I would highly recommend Lex at Rifles Inc. My gun is a master series that is more of a standard weight rifle, but he pretty much built his reputation on light weight guns. He is very easy to work with and very knowlegable.

I have one of Kirby's 270 AM's, and it is a fine piece of machinery. Delivers everything he said it would. Easily gets up to 3400fps with the Wildcat 169.5gr RBBT ULD, and up to 3250 with the 195's. Accuracy out to 1K has been at or under .5 MOA easily, and I got 9.5" at 1150yds. One thing Kirby does is specialize in LR accuracy. He builds for this and I have never heard of anything not holding up to his own standards. Good luck with your rig no matter who build it. Mike / Tx
